HOUSTON - Two men broke into a deputy constable's northwest Harris County home Tuesday afternoon.

They were met with gunfire but not from the officer. Instead, his teenage son surprised the burglars with a military style weapon.

The 15-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister were home alone when they heard glass shatter on a back window.

"The male was concerned with protecting his younger sister, and that's exactly what he did," said Lt. Jeff Staubner, Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the 15-year-old grabbed an automatic weapon belonging to his father, a Harris County Precinct One deputy constable.

He confronted two intruders ransacking the living room and began shooting. An adult suspect was hit several times.

According to Lt. Staubner, his juvenile accomplice drove him eight miles away to Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. The hospital alerted the sheriff's office.

The adult suspect was then flown to Memorial Hermann, The Texas Medical Center. His condition isn't known.

The juvenile was brought back to the scene and questioned. Both are facing burglary charges.

Lt. Staubner says the shooting will be referred to a grand jury.

Is that really a fully automatic weapon or a semi-automatic weapon that the new media made fully automatic themselves? I heard that the guy was shot three times (twice in the legs and once in the stomach (I think)).

The kid did well but needs more range time and a talk about center mass.

I had to have a talk with a lady at work the other day who tapped on her window with her handgun when a man was trying to pry open one of her windows. He ran off. I told her next time to tap on the window with a 357 bullet moving at rapid speed. I guess at least she was armed.

What a brave young man! Kudos to him for protecting the life of himself, his sister and the family's property!

He deserves a medal.

I suspect it was a semi-auto and I think it was an AR-15.

The kid won't face any charges and Dad won't have any problems with Texas' so-called "safe-storage law." One of many exceptions applies if the gun is used in "lawful self-defense." Also, the law only applies to a "readily dischargeable firearm" and the definition is narrow. Harris County has a policy of taking all homicide cases to the Grand Jury, but that won't be a problem.

Father and son will be fine.

Once again we see again the benefit of teaching young people gun safety.....and usage.....and protecting your own.

Quite a story in light of the McDonald ruling this week. Seems despite what the antis say, having a gun, even an "assault weapon" in the home even with young children present can actually SAVE the lives of your family members.

I have taught my son how to safely handle, have respect for, and shoot firearms since he could barely hold up a shotgun.
As he grew (he's 17 now) it transitioned to handguns. I have no problem letting him have access to my firearms because
he has earned my trust and I have given him the tools he needs to make the right decisions.

I'm not saying this is right for everyone but it works in my house.
