I finaly sent in my renewal paperwork. It was received 7/19
8/14 I got a reject on finger prints
8/16 returned a fresh set of prints (hard copy of electronic prints)
9/14 renewed license received.
Looks like they made it within the 60 days.

Congrats. I sure hope mine is that smooth. Then I won't have to worry about it for 5 more yrs.
If my old one has not expired yet, but the renewal has not gotten here yet, can I set in the waiting room armed while I continue to heal

No sir. Armed & peaceful. That is the way I describe CHL holders to the general public when they start to ask.

I got my new card today. I took the renewal class on 7/18 and left town for a few days. Upon my return I sent the packet in via Certified Mail return receipt requested and it was dated by DPS as received on 8/9. 36 days by my count. My birthday was the sixth and at midnight that day, I no longer had a valid Texas CHL and I was out on the road. Fortunately I had two other permits which were valid. Moral of the story is don't wait until the last minute like I did.
