don't forget your lunch

I am a man of routine. Everyday my wife is kind enough to pack my lunch before I head out to work. Today I got busy loading equipment in my truck and like a bone head I walked out the door and left my lunch on the counter.
No biggie, I will just grab something out. About 1:15 I am heading back to the office and stop off at a little mexican burrito place. They have great burritos, serve them super fast, and their cheap, so what's not to love? The place is a Juarez based business that has opened a couple of locations in El Paso.
I had a meeting in 30 minutes so I walk in grab my order and sit down quick. I had noticed the place was really empty, which is unusual, but I figured I just missed the lunch rush. I am sitting down for about 2 minutes when the police come pulling into the lot. They walk in and start talking to the employees. A couple of minutes later two different TV crews pull into the lot. There are only a couple of other people eating in there and the cops seem to be focused on talking to the employees so I figure it is time to go.
Re-wrap my burrito, thank the lady at the counter and walk out. Now the curiosity has got me, so I walk over to the camera guy who is standing in the lot getting video and ask him what happened. He tells me that there was an attempted kidnapping. Apparently several men walked in right after the lunch rush and asked to speak to the owner. The manager told them he was not there so two of them proceeded to hop over the counter and go to the back to look for him while the others stayed in the front. According to whoever called the cops, they were all carrying guns, though they did not point them at anyone or make any specific threats. The two guys who went behind the counter determined that the owner really was not there and the whole group left without incident.
All of this happened literally minutes before I came wandering in. This stuff is ridiculous, and I have been running through a lot of "what ifs" in my mind. I can tell you though, I won't be forgetting my lunch again in the near future. I am gonna be watching the news tonight to see what became of it all.
