i noticed that my local police department has posted 30.06 signs at their doors. i dont know how long they have been there but isn't this illegal? this is not connected to the jail. they may have a holding area but the jail is further down the road. i'll be sending an anonymous e-mail asap.

Any chance there is a courtroom in the building?

If there isn't some disqualifying reason, I think 30.06 signs on PD's are legally unenforceable. That's not to say that some kind of "force" won't be used against you, so tread lightly. Also, beware that even if you are allowed to carry inside of one there may be secure areas where you must disarm. That has been discussed around here and I think that even the LEOs must disarm in these areas.

lowonair:

How do you propose to send "an anonymous email?"

Can't a PC literate detective trace it back to your IP (Internet Protocol) address?

Please tell us the Texas city in which this illegal 30.06 is located, so that forum people
will be aware of that in case they have police biz in that burg.

Your secret's safe with us. :-)

Use an anonymizer/proxy or go to the library.

Why not just walk in and see what they do instead? :smilelol5:

I don't know if I should post this or not, because it might just scare the bejeepers out of some of you.

Here's how I would send an anonymous email. Drive around until I find an open wireless network. (There's plenty of them, even today. An open wireless network is one that doesn't use encryption, so anyone can use it.) Sit in my car, connect to the network, create a Hotmail account using bogus information, and send the email.

That's just one of many ways to send anonymous email that no one could trace back to me no matter how much they know about computers and networks. If I was really paranoid, I'd "borrow" someone else's computer to do the deed (easy enough to do where I work), and return it when I was done.

In case you're wondering, I work in computer security, so I'm faced with these types of conundrums every day.

baldeagle:

The biggest hacker in the US, who hacked about 28 million credit
card holders' data, used to drive around corporate HQ's where the
wireless networks were not encrypted.

He would park nearby and download the data with wireless devices.

He had originally been arrested for hacking in Mass, NY, and NJ.
The FBI cut him a deal and he started working for them.

But he continued hacking criminally and was re-arrested in Florida. At the
time of his arrest he had a Glock on him. There was speculation that
he had it for protection from some Eastern European hackers who were not
happy with his FBI cooperation.

This is surprising to me...perhaps there has been a change in administration. I don't live there, but because I had trained in some of the same non-LE classes as the VPD, I had been invited to a class they put on especially for CHL holders. It included going through the same shoot/no-shoot video simulator that they put their parole officers through. I know they did some more simulator sessions for nonLEOs after that. There were no 30.06 signs, (not even unenforceable ones!) on the main police building then == I had reason to look for those, too.

Universal City also has 30.06 signs posted on the front (main entrance) door and the rear (employee only) door.

Municipal Court is on the back of the same building and the PD has a door to access the court area. My guess is they noticed this and posted 30.06 to comply with the law. :txflag:
