Need advice...travelling to California

I need advice.............
First, I have CHL. Second, since I am going to California, I bought a 10-round mag for my pistol.
I know that our CHL is honored by New Mexico and Arizona so I don't have worries when passing the 2 states. I will make sure that before crossing California, I have to unload the pistol, put it in a locked box/case and separate the mag. I have called the California Attorney General's office and they told me that I can put the loaded mag anywhere as long as it is not w/ the gun.
My concern is, if I get stopped in California for whatever reason, do I have to give my CHL together w/ my DL, registration, and insurance? I am not "carrying" it - at this point, I am just transporting it.
Thanks in advance!

No, you don't have to show your CHL. Since California does not recognize your CHL, then my guess is that it would not constitute legal I.D. anyway. Also check their website to make sure that your gun is legal there. Not all models are, magazine capacity notwithstanding.

Oh.. thanks for the telling me about the gun. I will try looking for a site that would have the info regarding what are legal there. I tried browsing yesterday but couldn't find a reliable site.

I found the site:
http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and my pistol is currently on the list. Now I can relax and stop worrying coz I have been deciding on whether to just leave the firearm here in El Paso or not. I will be travelling w/ the wife and 2 kids and I'd be driving at night to and from San Diego.
Again thanks a lot Sir TAM

My advice: get in and get out as quickly as possible.

Are you absolutely positive you need to go to California? I would reconsider.

No way would I drive through NM and Arizona without a gun, especially at night. What is California's law regarding shotguns in your car?

You are welcome, and that is exactly the site I would have referred you to. I was posting from my cellphone in the previous post, and didn't have the time to look up the address.

How about just don't go?

We cut across northwest Kalifornia last summer from Reno to Crescent City and then went up Oregon's left coast to the Columbia River Gorge and then east to Montana in our lil' RV. We even carried while out in the country when crossing NV.
Although many of the folk we encountered bore amazing resemblances to Charles Manson and/or Patricia Krenwinkle, we made it through without our trusty handguns.
Give it a go; who knows, you might make it?

That would be difficult since my kids want to go to Legoland
Just a clarification -- whether carrying or not both in New Mexico and Arizona, when stopped by cops, I do need to show them my chl together w/ my dl, right?

Your kids are going to owe you, big time.... ....not because Legoland is so great for kids, but because it is so awful for adults! I used to live in California, and I've been to Legoland. I didn't enjoy it that much. Legoland either.

TAM, I can't seem to find the answer to my question on
http://www.handgunlaw.us.." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I can't find the part where they discuss what to do when pulled over (regardless if I am carrying or merely transporting a pistol) -- if I need to hand over my chl together w/ my dl.
I know.... I'm kinda slow w/ the technology -- specially the internet

Try
http://www.carryconcealed.net/packngo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It's a trip planner for CCW. You put in which state you have a resident permit for, you can optionally add non-resident permits (Utah CFP, for instance), and then click on the states on the map image that you'll be traveling through. The utility will tell you what the regs are for each of the states you'll be passing through, with links to each of the state's CCW pages.

TAM introduced us to this site
http://www.carryconcealed.net/packngo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it appears to be a good 'un.
Thanks TAM.
