Just picked up a new Mosin Nagant 91/30, dated 1940, at this weekend's Big Town show. $100 out the door, picked what I though was the best one.





Love the feel of it so far, took me over a half hour to attach the bayonett, and even longer to get it off again, then I spent the rest of the evening washing cosmoline off of my hands, clothes, and furniture

Ok question is where should I take this bad boy?? This is my first 'proper' rifle (other is a 10/22) so I don't know much about them. Out of the few ranges I frequent I've only briefly read their regulations regarding rifles, Elm Fork for example says "NO FMJ." I only assume this includes all cheap surplus ammo right, and what would they prefer I shoot, those soft orange tipped bullets, im not sure about this, but I don't want to pay a premium to go out there for plinking, i'd rather shoot the cheap commie surplus stuff.

So where in DFW can a rifle newbie find an inexpensive real rifle range to try this thing out at? A bonus if they have a pistol bay as well, i'd like to run a few mags through my carry 9mm while im there also.

Targetmasters has an indoor range that is 50 yds. You are allowed to use FMJ, however, it cannot attract a magnet. Sighs vs. optics are not even discussed. Jupiter just north of 635. Hope this helps

Try this place, bring water, targets and a staple gun if you go. Kind of a rustic place but it does go out to 200 yards...

call before you go to make sure they are open
Magnum in Sanger goes out to 200 yards
FMJ allowed outdoor range (no tracers or anything because they start fires).
Magnetic surplus military ammo is allowed.

They were really great guys to deal with. My buddy bought a pistol from them as well.

They stock lots of Mosins as well as a few different brands of 7.62x54 for cheap. Surplus stuff was $5.50 /20 and non surplus was around twice that.

Don't know what to tell you about Dallas ranges. However, with a Mosin (or any of the WWI or II era full size rifles) I recommend shooting at 200+ yards.

Start at 100 yds to get comfortable with loading, sighting, squeezing the trigger, cycling the bolt. Also to make sure that your sights are correct. (Chances are they are perfect). Then move to 200 yards.

At 200 yards, the front sight will cover the target. There is a saying 'you don't have to see it, you just have to know where it is'. (It will help, however, if you shoot at larger paper targets). Regardless you'll be surprised how effective the Mosin is at 200+ yards. The biggest problem with a Mosin is that their triggers are a little squishy. But you can get used to your rifle's trigger by practicing with it.

The Mosin is great choice because all of the other old rifles use much more expensive ammo and the Mosin performs at or near the level as the others.

You can't really go wrong with a Mosin. I've decided that any time I order from a company selling them for under $100, I'm getting another They make great weapons to arm people who have little experience... just a couple of quick pointers and they'll be able to handle them just fine. Everybody needs a half dozen or so!

I'm just happy I managed to get my old M44 back from the friend I sold it to years ago. They're getting hard to find now!

What is the deal with no FMJ? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. What are you supposed to shoot out of real guns? Like stated above do they think should one should shoot those plastic training rounds or should we all just buy airsoft guns to be eligible to shoot at said ranges.

Dumb rule but I'm sure there is a reason behind it.

^That's what I heard, ricochets and the backstop.Same reasons I guess for steel core ammo. I'm not spending $2 /round so I guess im stuck with limited options. I think i'll take it first to DFW Gun Range, they'll let you shoot anything. What is it 20 yds max, oh well, I just want to hear it go bang at this point. Might check out some of those garland ranges, but that's a drive for me from the mid cities.
