I am having cataract surgery soon and I am looking for any information and or first hand experience about the Restor (bifocal-multi-focal) intra-ocular lens versus normal (single vision) lens. Specifically how it affects sight picture. I have seen information that the Restore lens may diminish night vision and low ight reading but can't find any info about shooting (sighting, etc.) I was told I could stop wearing reading glasses with the multi-focus lens. Any one out there have the Retor lens?

Wish I could help, but I have had replacements for both eyes before your post for the first time made me aware of the existence of the Restor lens. I would be very interested in seeing your replies.

For what it might be worth, as maybe an alternative, I mentioned to my opthomologist that my hobby was handgun shooting, and he said to me that he could have the fixed-focused new lens set to focus at my choice of distance from my eye. While the customary setting is at far distance he could insert a lens set to focus at the distance to the front sight of my handgun.

I was very tempted, having had the hassle of using glasses in competitive shooting for many years, plus the consideration of having the front sight in sharp focus with no glasses in a self-defence situation, but I decided against it. As he had led me to expect, both eyes are now 20/20 at far distance, but I still have the hassle of shooting glasses. At the range I often wish I had made a different decision. As you know, it is an expensive medical procedure, and many times I have wished that I could have a new lens implanted in my right eye. Regrettably, my medical insurance considers that another replacement for this purpose is akin to a cosmetic procedure, and would not be covered. I really cannot argue with that.

I have had surgery in both eyes. I consider my distant vision to be near perfect. I do have to wear glasses for reading (dollar store). I read an article posted by Mr. Cotton a while back suggesting stick on lenses on the upper portion of shooting glasses. When you duck your head a bit you can see your sights very well and still see your target. This method works well for me.

I have just had the first eye done, and next one is scheduled for Aug 7. I went with the single vision lens. My doctor HIGHLY recommended staying away from the multi-focal lenses. He said there are too many problems with them, and that they really just do not work. Apparently, the hype is a lot better than the real result.

The replacement lens I have now is set at front-site distance, and the other eye will be for true distance. I can read most things without reading glasses this way, and I can work on the PC with no problem. I am currently using a contact in the distance eye to simulate what my vision will be. It was a little wierd at first, but I am getting used to it.

Research this as much as you can. I was told that, once you make the decision, that is what you are stuck with. To remove the lens after it has been placed is NOT minor surgery.

BTW, as far as the surgery experience went - it was a piece of cake! Had it done on Thursday, slept most of the rest of that day. Stayed around the house Friday, just getting used to things. On Saturday I shot a couple of rounds of skeet. I can't wait to get the other one over with!

Good luck to ya on this!

Thanks. I think I will stay away from the multi-focus lens. I found some info from Opthamalogists and it was quite technical but most recommended fixed.

Thanks. I saw Charles' stick-on post. Very intriguing. I am leaning toward the fixed lens. I am used to wearing glasses and my left cataract is not really bad enough at this point to interfere much with vision. I will be wearing glasses anyway to correct the left eye.

PS Interesting name you chose for the Forum. How are the Lost Planet Airmen?

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor, but I am shooting for August 11. I have always been of the opinion that anything designed to be good at two things is usually good for neither. That said I am probably going with the fixed. I am amazed you were able to shoot so soon, especially a long gun.

I had the surgery yesterday morning. The worst part was the two hour wait after getting at the hospital @ 5AM. The actual procedure probably lasted about 20 minutes. I opted for the multi-focus RESTOR lens, even though I stated earlier I would get the fixed. I discussed the options with my General Practioner and although he had no experience with either option he told me a physician in their practice had surgery last year with a fixed focus replacement and now has to wear glasses to shave. I got my eye patch off this morning. The vision is slowly improving in my right eye. I get a little nauseous when I wear my glasses with the left eye scrip and plain glass replacement in my right. I am able to adjust enough to type and see the TV. The most amazing revelation is how much brighter colors are and whiter everything is with the right eye. I have a cataract in the left eye as well and the whites I thought I was seeing are actually a light tan when I close the right eye. Right eye vision is fuzzy close up and distance is so-so as well though it is an improvement to what I had without glasses prior to surgery. All this is supposed to improve over the next few weeks. I'll post how well I can shoot when the time comes.

Had both eyes done with Restor multifocus implants. I was disappointed in the initial results after the right eye (my shooting eye) but was assured by the opthamologist it would improve with time and he could do Lasik at a nominal cost to "touch it up" in a few months. I had a plain lens inserted in my glasses for the right eye since I needed my left eye to see clearly. It was a little disconcerting when I was moving or watching moving objects since my left eye was corrected by 6 diopters. The right eye was done August 11 and the left eye was done on Sept 8. I asked about getting mono focus implant in the left eye but the doctor advised against it because it would be difficult adjusting with two different lens. I opted for the multi-focus Restor in the left as well. The initial vision was a little better in than my right and has improved but I still had poor close up in both eyes and intermediate was not good either. Distance was acceptable and I was able to drive. I had the followup visit for my left eye yesterday and the refractive check showed me what my vision would be after Lasik. I was 20/20 distance and read the finest print easily. I got lenses in my glasses for the correction and I am seeing great today. It seems the main problem is the atsigmatism I have in both eyes which the glasses correct and later the Lasik surgery. I am looking forward to shooting with my new eyes.

Congratulations! I hope it continues to improve. I know how frustrating it is to have your vision fall prey to the age thing. :banghead:
