According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, pediatricians are urged to inform parents about the dangers of guns in and outside the home and they recommend that they incorporate questions about guns into their patient history taking and urge parents who have guns to remove them from the home.

Not my son's pediatrician. If he ever took that stance, my son would be seeing a different doctor.

Thats what is happening. They refused to answer a question about owning guns and the doc gave them discharge papers and told them to find a new pediatrician.

There was a thread a while back about the ASK program

I don't think that would go over too well in Texas.
. . . But, that was Florida and you wouldn't think they'd go for it there either.
It would be interesting to see some follow up information, say in a couple years, to see if he's still taking that stance and if he's still practicing in a gun-friendly state.
I wonder how long this has been going on.

From what I read the ASK program is for parents to ask their neighbors if they have guns and not about doctors asking their patients and then refusing to see them anymore.

I'm reading that thread now.
Love this quote:

The program has been politicized throughout the medical community and has been picked up by a lot of pediatricians. Sounds like this guy took it to this level.

My doc (not a pediatrician, of course LOL) is quite CHL/gun friendly. We do gun show and tell when I go in for visits. He's a CHL. If he wasn't then I'd have no qualms with changing doctors. I personally would not want an anti-gun doc for me or my family (no kiddos as of now), I'll spend my money on folks that I agree with!

My doc is from the Philippines he told me of making house calls (yes they still do in the Philippines) with a locked and loaded 1911 in his bag. He's a CHL and shooter too. Another doc friend of mine (ER doctor) is a shooter, collector, CHL and rabid RTKBA type. I'll keep both of them!

I reckon old Hippocrates will be spinning in his grave when he gets word of this.

I'd answer the question with "Do you have seat belts in your car?"

That's ridiculous!

I would be happy to find a different doctor!
Our kids ped asked the question several years ago. We said yes, he asked if they were secured, we said of course. He moved on to the next question.
I have no problem with anyone encouraging proper weapon storage in a home with small children. In fact, that is one area IMHO, the pro-gun lobby organizations (including, but not limited to) the NRA is not vocal enough.
I know this may not be a popular opinion here but I think that the NRA should go as far as to market and sell a low cost, quick access, handgun safe marketed to families with small children. And perhaps even, don't throw tomatoes at me, subsidize them for low income families. It would be the most expedient way to disarm the argument that the pro-gun crowd doesn't care that children are killed by guns in homes - and perhaps save a few lives in the process.

What the doctor did isn't the scary part, though it is a foretaste of what to expect under socialized medicine. What's scary are the comments from people following the article.
