Took my HD shotgun out yesterday for some fun and re-familiarization. I noticed when I unloaded the 00 buck shells, there was tiny white beads all over the inside of the shotgun, found that these beads are leaking out of a the business end of a couple of the 00 buck shells. What is this stuff?

Surely the shells are still okay to use, right?

Sounds like bufferred shot. The crimping on the end is loose and some of the bufferring may have leaked out. It is odd to hafe bufferring in lead shot though, so I could be wrong. Buffer is usually added to non-toxic shot (that's an oxymoron) to protect the barrel from the bb's that are harder than lead.

It is the buffering agent I would not rely on the shells that are leaking shoot them in practice or throw them away. Buckshot is buffered to do two things - - - First protect the pellets from deformation - - - Second to make the shot column more "Fluid" and reduce recoil when the shot passes through a choke.

That type of leakage is pretty common, especially if the shells are moved around a lot or exposed to vibration. To prevent such with all types of "premium" shells with the fine granules as buffering, I typically stand them on end and put a small drop of Elmer's glue (or similar) in the center of each crimp.

Remington is especially bad about this. I switched to non-crimped shells.

I doubt whether the integrity of the shell is actually affected, but it does get in the shotgun.

And they are Remington shells. Forgive my shotshell ignorance, but I didn't know non-crimped shells existed?

Anyhoo, I've got another 50 rounds or so of Remington left, after patterning some Winchester shells I've decided to switch to them.

It's the Nobel Sport that I use, but this Wolf photo shows the end better.

Essentially, there is a full diameter, flat wad secured about 1/4" from the end.
