Stolen or abandoned legally parked vehicle

My house is on a corner lot next to a narrow, lightly traveled street. No one parks there except in rare circumstances that are not operative in this case.

So this morning, I spy with my little eye an old, dark green Chevrolet Silverado pickup that is not in mint condition, parked outside my office window. It has no license plates, and the registration expired in January 2010. I confirmed that no corpses were visible through the windows. I did not touch the vehicle.

It's still there. I'm thinking that someone stole it and used it as a poor man's taxi to get to Galveston. I guess I'll just see how long it takes someone to run into it. I know from experience that the police will not get it towed until I call or it's wrecked.

I had that happen a couple of times back in Pasadena, where a car thief abandoned a stolen vehicle near my house. But in those cases, the cars had been pretty much stripped, so it was easy to tell that nobody was coming back for it.

This one looks like it could be driven away by someone with the key.

Huh. Someone drove it away a few minutes ago. I didn't see the driver.

Perhaps it was re-stolen.

Maybe it was parked there until the driver got back.

Indubitably, Sherlock. ;-)

The question is still why it was parked there. Without going into hundreds of words of detail, there is no reason to park there unless the driver is visiting me. Everyone else on the block has a garage, and there are more convenient parking places for visitors to other houses.

Maybe it was a "back door man" that was parking away from his girlfriend's house. I dunno.

Maybe it was parked back there because the registration expired in January. Please let us know if it comes back. :tiphat:

That makes sense if he knows the spot is out of sight out of mind for the cops. Next time I dare you to put a for sale sign in the vehicle window with the local police number.

The vehicle was parked about 200 feet from the home of a constable who probably drove past it at least once, but no one who knows Galveston would worry about a vehicle being towed or ticketed for some minor infraction like not having plates.

BTW, I believe in minding my business, but this particular vehicle was inside my self-defined security perimeter.
