Hey folks,
Will be traveling to Atlanta in November. As far as i know, there is reciprocity from any state issued CHL/CCW.

I wont be traveling all around, just going for some training near the hotel.

Anything important i should really know?

Georgia just had a major revision of its carry laws, all for the better. The "public gathering" restriction has been removed, along with the prohibition on carry at restaurants which serve alcohol. Bars are still off-limits without specific permission, but "bar" in Georgia means a place which serves alcohol and no food, so you don't need to worry about percentages of profit like in Texas. OC and CC are both allowed with your license; no more restrictions on manner of concealed carry. Carry in a car doesn't require a license.

A license to carry also allows the carry of knives 5" and longer, open or concealed, with the same restrictions as a handgun. Strangely enough, right now, carrying a knife less than 5" in length requires no license, but isn't preempted by the state, so you might be safer with a bowie than a Gerber.

Watch your butt at all times. I have never been in a city that felt as dangerous as Atlanta (I've not been in Dallas at night yet). There were times I thought I would get carjacked even as I drove at 40mph

Mr.Green's advice is sound - the city itself is a dangerous place surrounded by many much less dangerous suburbs, particularly to the north. Panhandlers are everywhere and very aggressive.

If you'll be driving, pay strict attention to everything around you at all times. I never saw so many gruesome and easily avoidable wrecks anywhere else as I did when I lived there. Major incidents involving heavy trucks were an almost everyday occurrence.

On major highways, the effective speed limit (where enforcement begins) was 80 MPH during those years, and lots of folks pushed well beyond that. Those who traveled slower took their lives in their hands.

Alas, I remember when Atlanta was a nice SOUTHERN city with considerate and mannerly inhabitants of SOUTHERN descent.

We go to Atlanta about twice a year to see the inlaws (they live near Stone Mountain) and have never had any problems. Have yet to see anyone open carry.

All i know about Atlanta is from what i see on COPS, lol.

I wont be out much, the training is at IHG headquarters and the hotel is right next door.

I will be walking to and from the hotel, but not sure about the time. All day training i imagine so im concerned about carrying while in "training" which is probably considered on "company time".

It looks like you're out in the burbs and north of Buckhead which is a nice area.

Yes, staying at the Crowne Plaza by Perimeter Mall. I hope its a nice area.

Someone once said that yankees are kinda' like hemorrhoids. When they come down and then go back, that ain't too bad. When they come down and stay, it can really hurt...in some cases.

I was just in Atlanta a few weeks ago for a confrence... got lost a couple of times, and was a uhhhhhh interesting time.

Happy to have taken the effort to come armed. Nothing even close to a situation needing to react with that kind of response thank fully.. Just a heads up attitude and direct eye contact suggesting there were better (easier) marks to be had seem to work out OK.

Going again 1st week in SEP..... once again I'll play two step TSA dance to take a few pounds of steel, lead , plastic and powder with me.

Stuck on a Delta flight this time.... never flown with a gun with them before... so we shall see how that goes.

When I was commuting between NC and Mesquite, I always planned my travel so I would be going through Atlanta late at night or before 6am. Even at 5:30am, the 80mph rule was 110% true.

It shocked me the first time I drove through doing 70mph and was almost hit three times in one mile. I got on the gas a lot more after that, even was in a group of eight cars that passed a marked APD car

It's always a good idea to print off the airlines rules for firearms in checked baggage, make sure you comply completely, and take the copy with you to the ticket counter to help out the ticket agent who may not be familiar with them.

Yup, I do that and a printed page of the TSA rules covering flight with firearms..Printed back to back and laminated
