This kind of thing really is a rare event. Most successful defenders are at home or in their business premises.

You got me curious. This was on the coast of VA, just south of Norfolk and the Chesapeake Bay. I looked up the street -- it would appear the defender was at home, but not IN home. Outside in the yard or driveway, apparently. It appeared to be a residential area.

There is a neat little sidebar that has a search function for crimes near an address. I entered the approximate address of this shooting for all crimes within 1/2 mile. Between 2005 and today there were well over 10,000 crimes reported in that area.

Chesapeake is a few miles South from Norfolk in the same metro area (similar to Spring, TX in relation to The Woodlands). In the Norfolk area there are the following cities in close proximity (VA Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, Portsmouth, Newport News).

Probably there is no urban area that does not have thousands of crimes per year. I have seen the arrest logs for the police beat that I live in. There are sometimes over 100 a day, but most are for public intoxication, driving without insurance, DUI, possession of a controlled substance, domestic assault, or shoplifting. Stranger assaults and robbery are rare. Even burglary is pretty rare around here.

I have to add that we probably have more arrests of rowdy tourists or tourists who are looking for "action" than locals. When the police run a prostitution sting, they get people from hundreds of miles away.
