I think I've heard of NC being referred to as "the New Jersey of the South" or something like that in reference to its gun laws.

Actually, If I recall correctly, the law was enacted in the late 60's. It has close to never been used, except for a huge snowstorn last year. That prompted a lawsuit to challenge it, which is still currently ongoing.

I think this recent declaration, combined with the knowledge of what happened last time during Katrina, will help bolster the arguement of this lawsuit.

All I can say is if there is ever a time I want to be armed is during a mass evacuation and a real disastor. For an adult not to be armed is irresponsible.

As someone who has lived there for 36 of my 36.25 years, I can say you were told wrong.

I lived there from '75 - '88 and can say that it mostly got worse since I left (brother still lives there). Open carry used to be legal almost anywhere, though not common in the big cities. Concealed carry is quite restrictive compared to Texas with many more places off limits and onerous notification (of LEO) requirements. Full auto NFA stuff much harder than Texas or other southeast states w/ a county permit required even for dealers.

I think the New Jersey of the South stems from the politics. A lot more left/liberal than most states south of Maryland. The highest state income tax on the east coast south of Jersey. Big city, county, and state police seem to have a para-military attitude/approach. I grew up in Charlotte, but if I had to live near there today, I'd try to get south of the state line in SC. Even Virginia which turned "blue" in 2008 has much more relaxed gun laws than NC.
