In Hot Springs, Arkansas, a man shot an off-duty police officer who had followed the defender's wife home in what was described as an attempted traffic stop. The shooter-defender was found to be justified.

I would venture an opinion that cops who are ...not on duty, not in uniform and ...in his unmarked pickup truck have little business trying to directly intervene in (alleged) crimes, especially traffic incidents, that are short of actual immediate threat to someone's life or limb. Call a uniform and be a good witness just like Joe Citizen should. Run much less chance of being mistaken for a thug and getting shot, or at least taken at gunpoint, by your fellow cops...or citizens. (And, frankly, I think that either that prosecutor is a real stickler for everyone being equal before the law, or there was info not in the article that the cop was waaaaay over the line.)

Could be either or both. Knowing Arkansas, the officer was no one's nephew, either.

A man who is driving an unmarked "civilian" vehicle and not in uniform has no business trying to pull over a woman for suspected irregular driving, one of the least provable offenses in the universe.

I have educated my wife that if such a thing occurs, she should come to a screeching, rubber-burning halt in the most populated place that she can find, hit the panic button, and call 911.

So true! And if true for off-duty LEOs, how much more true for CHLs. We are NOT cops. We can protect ourselves and our family and others in immediate danger of death.
