A different kind of BG

A few weeks ago and because of one of Excalibur's posts, I bought a tactical flashlight. No, its not a Sure Fire but at 186 lumens, it is plenty bright and has a very focused spot for an LED light. I've been keeping it with me in the evenings. I've gone through a bunch of those cheap 1M candlepower rechargable lights and this flashlight is every bit as good. In fact, I liked it so much, I ordered a second one to have, just in case.

Last night, I had taken one of our dogs, on a leash, into our fenced back yard for a last potty stop before we went to bed. She was doing fine until I saw her stop and start into a low growl. A half a second later, I had the flashlight on and pointing where she was looking. Not 10 feet away was a skunk. He put his head up and caught the light beam full in the face. I thought "oh, no", just as he whirled around and raised his tail. For those who don't know, skunks can shoot 15 feet. He must have not liked the light but wasn't scared by it and he just high tailed it for the corner of yard. If our dog had charged him, there is no way he would have missed and would have probably caught me in the process. I figured that the flashlight saved both the dog and I from extended bathing and I'm very grateful.

We've had a terrible skunk problem this year. My neighbor and I have trapped 7 of them in the past couple of months, calling the Town to handle them afterward which they do. I have the trap set again tonight and hope that I can make it an even 8.

The question is, was his lifting his tail and pointing it at you sufficient show of force for you to return with deadly force?

And does it make a difference that it was at night?

No, it is a live trap.

Hoi, I don't think it would be considered a deadly assault if he sprayed me and hitting a skunk COM with his tail up and pointed at you is pretty difficult anyway. :smilelol5:

Well, come one Chas. Stop holding out on us. What type of light is it? How much $? 186 lumens is nothing to sneeze at.

Here is the link. I had posted it the other day, too.

Sorry about the typo in the first post. It is 180, not 186 but it shouldn't make that much difference.

Ordering a set of gel pens for a couple of bucks extra (to get the total purchase price more than $25) gets you free shipping. It cheaper than paying for the shipping for just the light.

Success! I'm sure Animal Services is not going to be happy with me for dragging them out to handle the skunk in today's predicted rains. I was able to stand about 75 feet away and shine the light towards the trap to verify that it has an occupant. Love that light. To make it easy for the animal services folks, we have a cardboard shield up on two sides so that they can approach unseen. The only way to see into the trap is to shine the light in the same direction as the cage door.

I hope that your as happy with it as I am. It doesn't have a button in the end like the Sure Fire does but, for the price, it sure is great.
I'd be curious about whether your reaction to is the same as mine after you get a chance to try it.

I ordered two and they just arrived today. One will replace my old worn out nonchargeable rechargeable spot light and the other will go in the truck. My daughter likes them. I may have to get her one. She has my love of flashlights. I'm impressed and pleased with them.

Thanks Chasfm11!

C-dub, I'm glad that they worked out for you. I'm just happy that that I found them and was able to share the information with others.

I don't know about the longevity or how durable the switch is but I'm using mine just about every night. They are a great and cost effective solution to being able to light up my back yard. I have no idea how they would function as a true tactical light (and hope that I don't need to find out) but I have been practicing with it like that.

Chas.

Bummer! I finally got batteries for the second one and it doesn't work. I tried the batteries from the first one it still doesn't work. I made sure I had them loaded correctly and I do. Now, I need to see about how to return it for exchange. The first one works great!

I'm sorry to hear that you had problems with the second flashlight. I've had a really great response to any problems that I had with past Amazon purchases, just using their recommended process. I think if you tell them that you are just looking for a working replacement, it will go quickly for you.

Good Luck

Chas

P.S. Both of mine are working fine. I hope that yours was just something that got bumped in shipping.
