Rifle in the car in TX - legal?

As far as I know, it is legal to keep a long gun in a vehicle, in a bag or in the trunk, right?

I know it is legal in TX to have it visible, but that is inviting theft?

If I kept a rifle in my trunk or in a bag on the backseat, that is okay, correct? Even if loaded?

Also, is there any legal problems carrying a bag with a rifle inside?

Except for places you're not allowed to have weapons of any sort, ie, on the premises of a school, court house/offices, Fed Buildings, etc. you can carry a long gun concealed or unconcealed, loaded or unloaded in your car, truck, bycycle, or wheel chair down the sidewalk anyway you wanna. As long as it's not done with the intent incite or cause havoc to run amuck.

oooops, I forgot about the Feds 1,000' of a school thing...might oughta check that out.

Ok, thanks for the info. I knew that in TX - a CHL didn't cover a long gun - so I wasn't sure what the rules were. But I'll keep that in mind about the other locations

Thats the key, Is it an exception?

If I leave my own house and get on a public road which is less then 1000 feet or even the 300 ft texas law, am I law abiding?

I guess it comes down to the man on the line, if I got stopped, for whatever reason, and I'm headed to the range with my rifles.

I don't see that in 18 USC 922 (q)

Is a car considered private property?

As far as I'm concerned. But that's something you'll have to argue with the judge, if in the 1 in a billion chance you get arrested and actually prosecuted for this law. You have to be doing something really stupid for this law to actually come into effect, as well as have someone actually care about prosecuting this law.

Per GFSZA, you can legally possess firearms in the 1000' zone on your own private property. You can also transit the zone with firearms in your vehicle if they are unloaded and secured (I forget precisely whether they have to be "locked" up, or trunk is ok, or what). You can have a loaded handgun in the 1000' zone as long as you have a CHL from the same state the school zone is in.
