Title 2 Application

Greetings. I moved to Texas a year ago from gun unfriendly states and have been loving my new-found freedoms. I'll be applying for a CHL later this year.

I have a question about Title 2 applications. I was looking at shotguns, specifically the Mossberg 590 A1. I noticed that 14" barrels are available and looked into the process to get NFA weapons. One part of the application process requires you to get a local law enforcement chief to sign off on it. How hard is this signature to get? I live in the city limits of Austin. I'd imagine this would be the most gun unfriendly place in Texas. Should I go to the City PD or Sheriff's office?

You may have trouble in Austin, a city that has been described as "60 square miles surrounded by reality."

Look into doing a trust as well. Those require no CLEO signature.

The ATF accepts a variety of signatures for NFA items--police chief, sheriff, district attorney, federal judges. From what I've read, the Travis County sheriff will sign. The old Austin police chief wouldn't, but I'm unable to find anything either way about the current chief.

Another advantage to going the Trust route is anyone listed as a Trustee (changable without any legal rigamarole) can possess the controled item (wife, kids, business partner etc) and the weapon does NOT have to be transfered when you die (otherwise whoever inherates would have to go through the same process and buy a new $200 tax stamp)

Thanks for the advice. My first impression of the trust was that it was going to be over kill for my purposes. However, it looks like that's probably the best way to go.
