I did a search and couldnt find anything on this so if its a repost Im sorry.
If you havent seen the video or dont know what Im talking about you can see the video on the Fox 4 website which is where I saw it.
http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/video/09151 ... ideo-today" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The story is that they try to stop a guy for riding he motorcycle on a sidewalk, he runs and a chase begins, once the chase end the officers exit to make the arrest and "beat him".
Did they?
Im sure in somes eyes they did but to me, from what I could see it didnt look that bad. The whole "beating" lasted only 13 seconds. Granted, that must seem like an eternity when being hit with an ASP and closed fist but I dont feel they went overboard.
However, I really dont think it was wise for the one officer to say
"Pull up alongside him so I can beat the sh** out of him”
and that that potentiated the whole situation. I think it may have just been his adrenaline. How many of you have said something extreme when all hyped up knowing full well you wont make good on your word?
I also feel that the chief is only taking the actions he is taking in an attempt to counteract some of the more recent follies since he has taken office in a effort to regain some level of respect from the public.
Im of the belief that once you run from a cop, resist or endanger the officer's safety/life you lose all your rights.
I do belive in police brutality and just dont think this is a valid example of officers going overboard. I think they did what they had to do. Its not like they continued hitting him once he was in custody.
You cant see the perp...maybe he was resisting, maybe he was laying on his arm/hand? If you notice they did have some difficulty cuffing him and sometime you have to get physical to get someone to comply. You cant be stronger than everyone else out there.
Your opinions?

I saw a brief interview with the Chief regarding this. His stock just went up in my book.

The guy immediately went down hitting the pavement even before the officers were out of their vehicles. This incident shouldn't happen like this. It is not just stepping on his head, or laying a knee in his back, that was a baton wiping big time.

It looked to me like they went out of frame on the left after the guy bailed off the bike and then both the perp and the cop went to the ground together.
i didnt see him go down voluntairily, maybe i just missed it, i'll have to go look at it again.

I know it's only my opinion but is difficult to justify standing over and unarmed suspect laying on the ground and beating them with a baton repeatedly after they have surrendered. If you are down on the ground with him and he is wrestling for control I can understand it. If he is armed I can understand it. But this looks like neither.
I agree... The police chief's stock value just shot up a notch in my book as well. He appears to need it after this:

I disagree. It doesn't look like abuse to me. The perp was resisting arrest all the way, and the arresting officers got a few licks in during the takedown. You know what they say.... If you didn't want to go to Chicago, why'd you get on the train?

The article says that 22 officers were interviewed and that an officer intentionally turned the dash cam away to keep it from being seen. I wonder what kind of reputation and previous files these officers had and what their defense was behind closed doors. If they were known to be jerks, had lots of complaints against them, and admitted to giving him the whooping he deserved then I would expect things to go the way they did.

I'm not sure we are looking at the same video TAM. I swear I see the dude dive to the ground hands and knees first the officer on the right begins wailing away with the baton then the officer on the left lands knee first on his back then THEN I see the guy try to turn over to try to shield himself from the baton strikes then the officer on top begin pounding him with his fist. I never see the suspect throw a single blow.

I definitely see the guy get down on his hands and knees (3:06), then the officer runs up and starts striking him on the back (3:07) as he's on his hands and knees, knocking him down to the ground.

Lets be honest...this video angle sucks and we cant say who is doing what beyond a shadow of a doubt.
That is the standard both sides will be judged by.
They'll separate everyone and see who's stories line up. In the terrible perspective and video quality I saw, it looked like the guy was fighting, and got his hands free at one point.
I have little sympathy for either party if they were in fact out of line. However, it is hard to tell. That won't stop us from speculating though :)

The video is inconclusive imo as it neither justifies or condemns the actions of either party.
The suspect drops below the view of the camera before the officer uses his baton, so there is no evidence on camera that use of the baton was warranted, or not. Likewise with the hand strikes from the other officer.
Without conclusive evidence, I will always give the LEO the benefit of the doubt as opposed to the idiot endangering lives and property in an attempt at unlawfully fleeing from OUR police force attempting to perform their lawful duties.

bad video angle or not, there are things we know for certain:
1. the rider needs to take another MSF course. Shifting technique, or lack of, and poor clutch control
in the friction zone when turning. Plus, he was not dressed for safe riding, or escaping, as the case may be.
2. the officer with the baton...... ouch...... got in at least 5 licks, 4 of which came from over head and landed
downtown...... that folks has got to hurt.
3. the main lesson is: DO NOT RUN FROM THE POPO!! It only makes them mad and it gives them a reason to
administer "stick time".

I know in my experience (as a LEO), the media never gets the story right off the bat...
Give it time, the internal investigations paired with FBI investigations will get closer...odds are these cops will sue and get their jobs back - this is my opinion based on what is seen, and unseen in the videos.
