My recently aquired brother inlaw, was a marine in iraq and suffer's greatly from ptsd he is in the woodlands spring area. I do not know where to even begin to find a non profit organization to help him. He is a great man and this is getting the best of him, he just got a job and i fear that this will make him lose his job and maybe worse his wife any help and prayers will be appreciated. His name is Chris.

Have your brother-in-law read this site. This site might also be helpful, as might be this site. Might I also suggest that there are some folks on this forum who can offer up powerful prayers for your BIL. Please tell Chris that there are many veterans that will reach out to him and help him work his way through the pain of his trauma. Contact the local veteran organizations and ask for a buddy who can work with him. And tell him he can call me any time. I'll PM you my cell phone number. 24/7/365, no exceptions, he can call.

Is this something he is aware of or not?

Many behaviors that are attributed to PTSD are a result of psychological and physical conditioning that occurs naturally during repeated exposures to stress. Sadly, many are not aware that this conditioning even occurs, however, it is inevitable, involuntary, and is an evolutionary survival tool shared by human and animal alike. Fortunately, conditioned behaviors can be re-conditioned relatively easily by trained folks with the right know how, time, and repetition.

Definitely check out the web sites as noted above, and feel free to have him join this site and PM me if he desires to talk to someone who is familiar with the issue.

You need to walk him into the Conroe VA Clinic. They have tons of programs that specifically address PTSD.

Yup, I know it can make normal people insane sometimes, but that's one of the VA's chief responsibilities, and they WILL help him. If his PTSD has been diagnosed and documented as part of his discharge, he will definitely be seen by the VA.

I believe that that has recently been amended to where you can get it diagnosed after your discharge also. Not sure as I didn't pay much attention as the only PTSD I suffered was being married twice.

Yes he is aware of the situation, he is the person who told me about the ptsd. The only thing is i just need him to know that it's too big for him to handle by himself.

Purplehood- Thank you for letting me know about the conroe location. I will pass along the info.

I wish your bro-in-law luck and he should count himself lucky that he has a new in-law that cares like you.

From what I understand disability through the VA has gotten easier to get in recent years. My dad was in some pretty nasty stuff in Korea and he just recently got 100% disability after all these years. And none of it is for anything physical. He was a medic (sitting duck) but was never wounded.

We will definitely include your brother in law in our prayers when we pray for and are thankful for all those that fought to ensure the freedoms we take so for granted. Thanks to everyone that has served! God Bless you and yours!

An organization I hadn't before heard of came to my attention the other day and I thought of your brother-in-law.

They have a branch that pairs psychiatric service dogs with veterans, especially those with PTSD. This page has a lot of helpful links.
