Unfortunately, not everyone who has a CHL has that middle-aged "Texas good ol' boy" look. It still boils down to a perception thing when folks see someone with a gun. It has always been that way. I used to ride motorcycles with a bunch of other off-duty cops on weekends. Many would frequently not shave for a couple of days, wear older jeans and t-shirts and look pretty rough in general. We had two different incidents where one of the officer's BUG was seen. You could see the panic creep into the store clerk's face until one of us showed ID to put them at ease. And, this was in a rural area of a state where open carry was totally legal.

If open carry would pass, you would have the same type of issues. People have pre-conceived ideas and like it or not, they will usually profile you and if enough bells and whistles sound in their head, they will call a MWAG call. Just take a look at the other thread running on the guys that were at a restaurant in Wisconsin and got called on. The caller decided they were not police officers because of the appearance of the individuals and didn't know it was legal to open carry.

True. I'm a long-haired, bearded (both beard and hair almost to my belt line) hippy type lookin' guy (except it's 100% grey now) since I retired, big change from most of my life as a short-haired suit wearing guy, (though I rode a bike in college) but I wanted to try it, since I never did before. (Don't care for the trouble of all the extra time devoting to hair care now, so when Spring comes, it's getting donated to "Locks of Love")

My rule of thumb if I spot a MWAG in his pants is "what kinda holster do they have?"

However, the general public isn't educated well on that matter at all.

That is a good rule. Most bad guys stick the gun in their pants or hoodie but usually good guys have holsters.
