CNBC documentary will cover.

It is allegedly well-known in the shooting community,
including snipers, that the Remington 700 bolt action rifle
is prone to firing without pulling the trigger.

This documentary will air on the CNBC network on
Wednesday, 10/20/2010, at 900 PM Eastern, 800 PM Central.

Former Remington insiders claim that the company will not admit
the problem or take remedial action to improve the trigger's safety
engineering.

This issue has been out there for years. Mt father in law actually shot a man dead in Alaska back in the early 60's and blamed it on the 700 going off on its own. Honestly, I don't know if he was telling the truth or not, but he had a good lawyer, and the jury found him not guilty. The lawyer actually had data back then to convince a jury the guns had a problem with discharging on their own.

I've got a beautiful Remington 700 VSF .308, and I've never had a problem with the safety. I did have a trigger issue, but I blame that one on myself. The rifle came from the factory with a 6 lb trigger, and I had a gunsmith lighten it. He set it to a 3 lb pull. About a year or so later, the trigger mechanism came loose and fell out of adjustment, causing it to "fire" on closing the bolt.

Fortunately for me, I discovered the problem while cleaning the gun rather than at the range, so no round was ever actually accidentally discharged. I took the gun back to the gunsmith and he fixed it. It's been right as rain ever since, with a clean break at about 2.5 to 3 lb.

But I claim credit for the problem, because the trigger would have likely never had a problem if I hadn't had it modified. At some point, I'm going to buy a good aftermarket trigger for it anyway.

I was out hunting with a friend in the late 1970s. He had just bought a brand new Remington 700 and just completed his hunter safety class where I was one of the instructors.

A few weeks later when we were in the field, he switched on his safety and the gun went off. He was very upset and embarrassed, but swore that he didn't have his finger on the trigger. He was startled by the shot and received a blood blister on his thumb from the recoil.

I was standing next to him but didn't see one way or another. I told him that there was no harm done since the gun was pointed in a safe direction, just like he learned in class. I never knew for certain whether he pulled the trigger or not, but now makes me really wonder.

I own three Remington 700s built in the 1960s and have never had any issues. I did lighten the trigger pull on my .222 Rem Varmit by adjusting the screw. Still no problems.

I certainly don't want to start a war over this supposed "issue" but I will state two truths from over 50 years of shooting Remington 700's.

1) Any idiot, thinking himself a gunsmith, can cause a Remington trigger to go off when the bolt is closed.
2) That same idiot can probably arrange for a whole host of other makes to do the same thing.

Don't believe everything you hear from the media. You should all know the truth: Every gun story in the media has at least one error. Finally, go over to snipershide.com and see if you can get every military sniper who has ever carried a Remington (nearly all of them) to agree that there is a vast Remington conspiracy. Sorry, but CNBC is "junk media", like so many others.

Does not look.good for Remongton. Least to say this is damaging to their reputation

I had a rifle that did it several times. It was consistant about it. If you pulled the trigger when the gun was on safe and then moved the safety to fire....it would just go off.....but only if you pulled the trigger when the gun was on safe.

If the rifle fires when safety is switched to off, then i will refuse to handle said rifle. Simply it is unsafe defective weapon

This is a long standing problem with many brands of bolt action rifles. Remington has just been the one in the spotlight mostly because of their position in the marketplace. Here's a link to a thread on StoppingPower on the same subject. Read Jim Higginbotham's reply. Mr Higginbottham is a very knowledgeable trainer, gunsmith, armorer and "gun guy" When Jim talks I listen.
