"New" Model 94

Okay, a bit of an embarrassment, however, I have a Winchester Model 94 that I 'forgot' about. My Father In-law gave it to me for Christmas in 2005 (or 04 or 06). Because we had flown to OH and were going to NY for New Years it remained in his safe. To make a long story short it is now in my hands.

I am now looking for a little advice. The better half insists that I should not fire it, but keep as is, because, "they don't make 'em any more". While this my seem like a good idea for her, I am not sure so sure. Regardless of what it is or ever will be worth, I cannot see me doing anything but passing it on the one of my children/grandchildren.

With that said, any ammo recommendations?

I take it it's in .30-30?
Search the serial number to check collectability. The '94 is one of the most popular rifles in the country, especially in the south. Most of them aren't collectable, but some are very valuable.
I added a peep to mine and the groups tightened up considerably at 100 yards.
I've been using the Remington ammo, 170 grain. Cheap green box soft point stuff.

--Jason: It is .45LC that is why I am seeking some recommendations on ammo. I don't think there is anything 'special' about this rifle that would make it collectible. I searched best I could on the S/N and it was outside the range of anything I found. THANKS!

I think Hornady is making LeverRevolution in .45LC now. Friend of mine who took me on my first deer hunt last year uses Hornady LR in 30/30 and swears by it. I would assume it would also be good in .45LC.

Oh, very cool! I wasn't even aware the '94 came in other calibers.

I really want a .357 lever gun.....

IIRC the big split between collectible and not is pre-1964 Model 94's. I have a 1959 that does not get shot often because of the increasing price. I think all the .45LC models are post '64 so I would shoot it and enjoy it - and take very good care of it.

BTW Hornady does not show Leverloution (sp?) in .45LC. I think probably because most loads in that caliber use a bullet that is wider than the primer and flat nosed.
