When I told a close friend that I have a CHL, she responded: "My only thought about the CHL - the govt and the police know who and what to look for." My wife has expressed the same concern. Any ideas what my response should be?

If you've ever bought a gun at a store, paid for parts or ammo with a card, they can find out not only that you own guns but what caliber and probably type.

You should counter with: Well if theres enough of us with CHLs, they're going to have a hard time rounding us all up!

I think I would just say that I am not 'looking for' anybody. I am not looking to start being a police officer, only to be able to defend myself. And while I think (or at least hope) my situational awareness has increased somewhat since getting my CHL, hopefully allowing me to avoid an incident in the first place - if someone confronts me with a weapon asking for my money, i am pretty sure I will know the 'who' and the 'what' at that moment.

Edit: I misread the target of the concern of your post. Sorry.

This is along the lines of:

"When you feel like it is time to bury your weapons.....It is long past the time to dig them up!"

I wear a seat belt just in case. I take first aid classes just in case. I have insurance just in case. I carry a gun just in case. Just in case that all doesn't work, I pray

I'm pretty paranoid....but like others have said....if the time comes to actually be worried about being on a list, it'll probably be too late anyhow.

Sure.... It should be "They already know who and what to look for, so what's the big deal?" Besides, if you're caught carrying a pistol in public without the defense to prosecution of a CHL, they will know who you are and where to find you because it will be real easy - in the hoosegow. And say bye-bye to CHL in the future (unlawful carry is a Class A misdemeanor).

Here's another thought: Does your friend have a CHL? If not, then why does she know so much about it? ....or does she?

They might know who, but they don't know what. Guns get sold or get lost when your boat sinks.

Having misread the point of your post initially, all I can add is that you will be right there with a few million of your closest friends.

Tell them that if it ever comes to the point that the government is looking to strip us of this constitutional right they are no longer authorized power by the people. They have become an enemy of the country which is the people. So, their action is an act of war against the rights of the people and it is our responsibility to remove those tyrants of their authority in any way available to us. In other words if they come for our guns because they misuse their power we are justified in stopping them from doing so. We are the power and authority in this country. Our governments are our servants and exist for no other reason but to protect ALL the rights of the people.

Y'know, that mentality kept me from applying for my CHL for a few years. I didnt want to be on some "list".
Well, that went out the window when I purchased a few new firearms (most of mine have been inherited).
Also, the saying "If its time to bury them, its time to dig them up"

If we get to a point where gun owners are being subjected to no-knock raids we've got bigger problems.

So taking all of that into consideration, ill be sending off the rest of my packet early next month. Ill not let some irrational fear prevent me and my family from being protected when we are outside the home.

General quirkiness and frequent breakdowns got me out of my DSM, plus buying a sportbike helped a tiny bit

I've heard others express the same sentiment and have thought about it myself, but I think it comes down to two basic scenarios: 1) things go along more or less as they are now and you can legally carry a gun for protection; or 2) things go down hill, in which case I think the odds are that you're going to be thankful you've got a CHL and don't have to wait several months to get one. If having one makes you a government target then we'll be well beyond the point of no return as a nation. And you didn't have to have a CHL to get your guns confiscated after Katrina --plus, who knows, maybe in a situation like that you'll stand a better chance of keeping a gun if you have a CHL than if you don't.

The question is a bit ambiguous.

I'd reply
Imagine you are in Luby's in Killeen on October 16, 1991, there is a man with 2 guns, systematically shooting 23 people in the head and he is 3 tables down from ours .... "I think I'd know what to look for"
1) an exit for me and my family.
2) my protection device which might help us get to the exit.

Per the other meaning:
I bought guns in the 1980s, so they'd come to my house anyway, even though those guns have long since been sold to other private parties, possibly even re-sold to the "gun buy back program"

When I get a question like that, I dismiss it or reply, "And?"

Keep drawing them out until they say what they really mean, or they drop the issue. If they're not willing to come out and say they're worried about the US government rounding up people and sending them to camps, well...if they won't ask an honest question, they don't deserve an honest answer.
