Last Sunday, I was helping set up for my church's Fall Carnival. I was up on a 4-foot step ladder hanging a banner and I missed a rung while stepping down. I still had most of my weight on my front leg, so it was a more of a slow fall that a quick drop. I manged to roll as I landed, so the impact was minimal. I had my Taurus 605 (2" .357) in a Kholster IWB holster at about 3:30. No damage to me and only the slightest scratch on the very tip of my wood grip from the grip hitting the concrete through my shirt. This is the first time I've suffered any kind of fall while carrying concealed. Funny thing is that my friend who was helping me hang the banner (he knows I carry and is going to get his CHL soon) asked if my gun was ok before he asked if I was ok! I actually had the same reaction and checked that my gun was secure before I checked myself for wounds. I was very pleased that the little 605 remained securely in its holster despite my acrobatics and suffered almost no marring or damage. Likewise, I was happy that I wasn't carrying further to the rear or SOB as that probably would have really hurt based on the way I landed/rolled. Honestly, I hadn't really thought about issues like falling off a ladder while carrying before this happened.

Missing a rung is a bad thing. Very easy to twist a knee if the other leg gets hung in the ladder........

Glad the weapon survived as well! We can never predict the whims of nature, and sometimes just have to roll with the punches...

Nice. Most everyone here would probably do the same thing. Many people do the same with their car after an accident. I did after the last time I went down on my bike. I had gotten up, grimaced looking at the damage to my bike, then my wife, and carried her to the side of the road before noticing that I was also injured. She had broken one of the tiny bones in her foot (we didn't know this for another two weeks) and could not put any weight on it.

I hate falling. I'm reminded of the time I tried to do some stunts on my kids skateboard.

Ha Ha!!! Sounds like me. No stunts, but I do ride my kids rip-sticks around from time to time. I'm waiting for the wipe-out but I've been lucky so far.

This is exactly why I discourage SOB carry. Heck of a way to end up in a wheelchair, that.

I fell off a 90' ladder.

Of course, it was only off the first step...

According to Mythbusters, if you had been able to grab a sheet of plywood on your way down, it would have softened the landing!

An OSHA class I took once taught that ladder falls are the number one cause of death on construction sites, albeit from 6' ladders, not 4'.

I think it was Bugs Bunny who said, "It's not the fall, it's the sudden stop at the end."

Needless to say I got my balance back quick but it’s scary even from a single story house. Did a quick internet search and it says anywhere from 2,000-6,000 people die each year falling off a ladder and 20,000-40,000 get hurt. Safety first!

I am too old be climbing on roofs. That's why I put my antenna in the attic.
