'Smart weapon' rifle debuts on Afghanistan's battlefields
Some U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan are using a “smart weapon” rifle that the Army hopes will be a "gamechanger" on the battlefield.
About the size of a regular rifle, the XM25 Counter Defilade Targeting Engagement System has the potential to neutralize an enemy, even when the enemy is hidden behind buildings or other barriers, said Lt. Col. Christopher Lehner, project manager for the XM25 with Program Executive Office Soldier.

I saw that thing demonstrated on Future Weapons. Pretty nifty, but I wouldn't look for it to be issued to all soldiers. Ammo has got to be expensive. It's essentially a sophisticated grenade launcher, and I would expect to see it as a squad or platoon level weapon.

Technology is cool, however, for the cost of 1 of those hot babies, you can buy 20 of those:
For 10X destructive power, just pick one of those:
And come on, hitting target at 500m from non-guided projectile is just marketing hype.

A grenade launcher is a very useful tool in urban combat situations. My nephew was an MP on the CO/XO's PSD (Personal Security Detail) in Iraq. He preferred to be in the turret on the Humvee. He said his best weapon was a standalone M203. Worked great for suicide car attackers that would try to enter into the convoy. If a vehicle was coming toward them and didn't veer off from the line within a reasonable distance, he could light them up with the green laser from the 50, and if they still didn't move, then the M203 could be used. He said the collateral from a 50 round shooting through was much worse than a direct hit with the M203 40mm grenade.
