gun battle in Mexico by the University of Texas, a college group petitioning to keep concealed weapons on campus and a controversy over a San Francisco college student facing deportation were just some of the news from college campuses across the nation this week.
University of Texas evacuated after border shooting
After gunfire on the Texas-Mexico border in Matamoros, Mexico came in contact with parts of the University of Texas-Brownsville (UTB) campus, students, faculty and staff were evacuated and classes and activities were cancelled, CNN reported.
The shooting killed at least 55 people in Matamoros, according to a statement released by the Mexican Navy.
Students expressed disbelief when they heard the gunshots.
“I was shocked that this could happen so close to campus,” junior Cynthia Hernandez, who heard the shots from the soccer field, said to The Brownsville Herald. “I don’t think the other (out-of-state) teams realized how close we were to the border, what we are dealing with down here.”
Although violence has been spilling across the Mexican border into Texas, students said they still felt safe going back to campus after the evacuation and cancellation.
“I think the university has set a lot of precautions and procedures in place to make sure that we feel safe,” UTB sophomore Adam Cardoza said to CNN.
Another gun battle occurred last month in Matamoros, during which UTB officials warned students in residence halls to stay inside, The Brownsville Herald reported.
Virginia’s Old Dominion University (ODU) group starts petition to keep concealed weapons on campus
In September, a student was robbed at knife-point on campus at ODU in Virginia. Though campus security vowed new methods for protection, the College Republicans group at the college had a different idea, Wavy.com reported.
The group recently sent out a petition asking to carry weapons on campus.
