XD vs. XDM Question

Please, keep in mind I'm a total n00b when it comes to guns, shooting, and carrying concealed. It's been over 20 yrs since I've even fired a weapon. So, with that in mind, here's my question.

I'm interested in the Springfield XD 40. But, what's the difference, besides price, between the XD and the XDM.

Thx,
Wys

Why the XDm is "Better" than the XD:
First off the barrel is supposedly match grade.
The trigger is supposedly better (I still recommend a trigger job on the majority of XDm pistols).
You have interchangeable backstraps to better fit your hand.
On the 9mm and .40S&W models you get more ammo capacity (.45 ACP is the same).
Take down doesn't require a trigger squeeze.
The XDm (9 and 40)is available in 3.8 and 4.5 inch barrel lengths while the XD is available in 3, 4, and 5 inch lengths.
The XDm now has a compact variant (3.8 with shorter grip) in 9mm.
The ergonomics are better tuned.

Overall, if the XD fits your hand well, and you shoot it well why spend the extra money on an XDm?

BTW, I own a 4" XD and a 4.5 inch XDm in 40 as well as a 4.5 inch XDm in 45.

All the above is true.
I have an XD45 & an XDm 40. Mom has the Subcompact.
SIL has the XD40 & Son XDm in 40S&W.
I think the trigger on the m's is much better than on the XDs.
Backstraps are well worth their portion of the difference to me.

When I have to move away from a 1911 due to my autheritis it will be to the XDm.
My .02cents & some think it worth about half that.

The other thing I found out recently is that the XDm 45 uses the same 13 round mags as the XD.

A friend got the XDm 45. It is nice, but I am not quite sure it is better enough for me to run out and buy one. My XD45 is just fine.

I LOVE my XDm9 in the 3.8 length. It has really nice balance with a full mag and the trigger is good right out of the box. It's easier to rack the slide too--at least i think so. I wouldn't take for it. No Siree :thumbs2: :fire

And don't forget, you can get an XD for at least $100 less than an XDm... even more if you go with a gently used one (like I did).

The XDm is worth the extra money.

I actually have an XD9 Service and love it. I have shot both, and as they come stock, the m is well worth the extra money. It's a $50 difference from Buds.

Could you explain why?

I truly am interested. I love my XD but if some one can give me a legitimate reason for an XDM over an XD I am willing to listen.

XDm features I like over the XD are listed. They are just my personal experience FWIW :
The XD is a great gun, so I mean it no disrespect at all. Still, here are some of the things that made me trade mine for my XDm:
1. During the field strip, you don't have to pull the trigger to remove the slide.
.
2. Match grade barrel

3. Grip comes with three back straps so you can customize it for your particular hand. I like the small myself.

4. ambidextrous mag release.

5. better trigger (imo)

6. I liked the XD gear package that comes with the XDm better than the XD, personally.

7. The Chevrons on the slide are cut at a better depth and angle for easy gripping.

8. I like the grip better right out of the box. Points well, feels great.

Wow, some really good responses. Thank y'all very much. When I can finally afford to purchase my first gun ever, I think I'll go for the XDm .40 in a 3.8" barrel.

My thought are that is its just a CCW gun the XD is fine. But if ya plan to shoot and plink with it often the XDM would give ya a bigger smile.

I agree 100%, and more so, concealing the XDm is not the easiest thing to do, especially IWB. I've tried, and the butt sticks out much further than I would like

Both are excellent weapons, could not go wrong with either one.
