There are tons of stats you can play with, but it's interesting that these stats are compiled by the UN, UNESCO, etc, etc

I find those numbers interesting. Nations like the UK, New Zealand and Australia that pretty-much prohibit handguns do not appear in the top 24.

Maybe it's because they can rob gunless victims with just a good beating. Biggest thug wins.
I'd be more interested in violent crimes numbers.

And the numbers were no doubt manipulated so that people would draw exactly that conclusion. Outside purely scientific endeavors statistics are mostly presented to advance an agenda of one kind or another, be it commercial or political. In my experience I can't recall a single instance when I've seen statistics objectively and transparently presented where either money or ideology is a concern of those presenting them. I highly doubt there is any statistic coming out of anything related to the UN that isn't politically motivated. And even in the technical realm when money and politics aren't an issue and the facts themselves are not in dispute, I've rarely seen people agree on their interpretation.

I don't dispute that. They may have washed the numbers to show only murder by firearms. They may have made up the numbers for all I know.

Why isn't El Salvador on the list? That's the home of MS-13 and MS-19 gangs
(Mara Salvatrucha, <sp?>). I had heard one report that stated that
El Salvador had the highest rate of deaths by murder in the world.

Of course, news is like the weather report. Listen to 2 different sources
and get widely divergent information.

I know a man from El Salvador who lived through the bad times there,
when the government soldiers were killing people on a whim. He was
extorted for thousands of dollars by bad guys.

Even though he lives
in Texas now, if he ever travels back to El Salvador to visit his family,
the family keeps his visit very hush-hush so that he's not harmed or robbed
since he's now a rich Americano (NOT). They can't mention his upcoming visit
to anyone since the walls have ears, and bad guys may come after him.
