Rep. Renee Ellmers plans to start carrying a concealed handgun at public events due to the Arizona shooting. She has a CHL and is against gun control.

That's cool. Acoording to this website North Carolina is an OC state.

Now maybe she can call her pals in the state house and get them to change the law so that she actually is permitted to carry at public assemblies (which I guess is the point).

NC has some of the more onerous restrictions on licensed concealed carry, including --

• public assemblies
• school property
• government buildings
• financial institutions (banks, etc.)
• any place that serves alcohol
• private property posted with any visible sign
• state parks
• national forests

As for open carry, there are further problems:

• Municipalities can and mostly do prohibit open carry.
• State law and case law do not defined concealed versus open in a useful way.
• NC has a statute called ""going armed to the terror of the people" which the police can use to arrest anyone openly carrying.

Also, being a congresswoman, she can't carry or even possess a weapon in Washington.

Lastly (if I have rained enough on the parade) I will point out that John Hinckley Jr injured Pres. Reagan and three other people with a cheap six-shot revolver while in the presence of a Secret Service detail.

It's difficult enough to defend against a rational criminal who wants to survive and get away. Defending against a lunatic is much more difficult.

You sure know how to put a damper on what should have been a joyous announcement. You reckon the good folk of the Tarheel State don't know how downtrodden they are? I know, for a fact, the NC State likker stores have a gunbuster sign on the doors.

You can carry in the Hardees and the Wal-Marts in Waynesboro and Jefferson, NC cause I done it last fall. Hardees' biscuits are without equal. I wish we had a Hardees rather than a Sonic and/or a Whataburger.

Me, too. I was in the Wal-Mart in Jefferson with my CC last fall. NC's restrictions on the State Parks and National Forests are really a bummer. Many other States followed with the Feds when they opened up the National Parks (except for the buildings, of course) to CC.

The other thing bad about NC is their declarations of "emergencies" where noone can carry. We were afraid that we would hit one of those, too, from a hurricane. Fortunately, it was just heavy rain and no declaration.
