Last night I was out shooting hogs and left my shotgun on my pickup pillar (cannot see it unless you are looking through the tint with both hands) had several boxes of 000 buck on the dash along with my 1911 in the front of my seat and my Browning Hipower in my holster. It didn't hit me until I was in the parking lot, put the shotgun shells under some stuff and drove out of the parking lot. Ended up being 20 minutes late for class by parking a 1/4 mile away and walking in.

I came here to search and read 4 different threads about state college campus parking lots and there seems to be a big gray area. I am not going to take firearms out of my truck when I routinely carry a minimum of $10,000 in cash a week on the way to school once a week.

While it may be legal, it seems to be so unclear I am thinking about taking a stroll to campus security and having a chat with them about my problem to prevent any problems from happening. I don't really want to be hooked up and searched if it is at all possible to clarify before hand.

Anyone have a different suggestion?

$10K in cash is not something I would want anyone to know I have with me. Four BGs net $2,500 each. That's better than knocking off some liquor store.

I am probably wrong, but I don't think that there are any current exemptions for long-guns within 1000 ft. I think that solely applies to CHL folks with handguns.

Federal GFSZA does not apply to colleges...so you're OK there. PC 46.03 only applies to school "premises" which means buildings, not parking lots, so OK there. I'd be hard pressed to see what they'd charge you with if caught with the guns in your vehicle, unless the handgun was exposed. However, I wouldn't recommend asking the Campus Police about it, because they might tell you it was against the school rules and could result in your expulsion. I'd be packing too if I was carrying around 10 grand on a regular basis... 'Course I carry a gun when DON'T have 10K too.

Man, I knew tuition had gotten outrageous since I went to college 30 years ago, but I had no idea!



But as far as the GFSZA, yes that applies only to elementary and high schools, not colleges and universities.
There is a lot of discussion about the GFSZA itself (not so much on college/university) here: FAQ: Gun Free School Zone Act and one of those threads has a link to the statutes that contain the GFSZA verbiage.

As far as state law goes, I think you are OK with guns locked up in the truck.

Me, I would definitely NOT put myself on the campus police radar by giving them the least hint that you have anything to do with guns. Aside from whatever campus rules (different than state law) may be in force, and whatever anti-gun-on-campus view the local campus police chief may or may not harbor, any time anything happened on campus related to violence or guns I would bet you would at least be looked over by the cops.

Under/behind the seat, or a locking toolbox bolted to the bed are your friends.

If the student can legally possess the firearm, and there are no valid signs or other notice, it's legal to have it in the vehicle in the parking lot. It's also legal for the college to discipline a student if guns are prohibited in the code of conduct.

You're definitely legal, so I'd go with the "Don't ask, don't tell" plan. Asking security is likely to cause more problems than it solves.

All this time on the forum and I am still confused. That worries me.

...life's like the old washin' machine...drowning slowly...gettin'stuff poured on ya, gettin' agitated...gettin' it all sucked outa ya, and then there comes the spin cycle...but it's never boring!!! I hope we get the CHL on campus bill passed...that'll be a big help...

The parking lot bill wouldn't help most students with this, but the campus carry bill would.

For some reason the parking lot bill excludes paying customers and only protects employees.

Anti-gun employers can lease the parking lot to a third company to operate, and then the parking company can prohibit guns for everyone except the parking company's employees.
