I have an earlier post about the effective range of a 9mm carbine. Now I am on the hunt for a reliable 9mm AR. I have looked at the high point, kel-tec, Marlin Camp9, CX4, and even an UZI with legal barrel. I think the AR is going to be the ticket for me. Now I am wanting personal experience good or bad with the AR platform chambered in 9mm. Thank you in advance for all knowledge and experience.

Are you looking for an upper, or the whole gun?

I prefer the whole gun with a warranty. I know it might be a little finicky with mags and ammo until I work some kinks out. I would like factory support with that aspect I guess. I would love one that take Glock mags. I have heard Colt mags are $$$ and the different mag blocks and modified Sten or Uzi mags sound like more headaches then what I want for the type of money I will have invested.

Colt. From my standpoint they have a better reputation.

gigag04: I wasn't aware that Colt made a 9mm AR. I couldn't find anything about it on their site, in their catalog, or in their retail price list.

I have a Kel-tec sub 2000. Not the best made rifle, and you get what you pay for. I have had fun with it but would not buy another. I got it when it first came out. It is really more of a toy.

At the price, it was an impulse buy.

I would recommend a trip to SOG armory. Since your in sugarland they shouldn't be too far, they're at say belt 8 and 59. I was in there a few days ago and they had quite a few 9mm AR's. Decent prices and a friendly staff.

I have a RRA upper that I put on a registered lower (SBR). I use the VM Hy-Tech mag block for UZI mags which can be bought pretty cheaply.

The mag block fits nice and snug in the receiver. This goes the same for the UZI mags (very little play if any). If you don't get a dedicated 9mm lower you have to make sure that you have a compatible hammer. The good news is that you can use it on both 9mm and 5.56 if you decide to move uppers around. You also need a different buffer, bolt and carrier too. I don't remember if I needed a different recoil spring. If so, its no big deal.

I ended up chopping the barrel to 5" and got a midlength (9") Samson rail. My suppressor fits inside and sticks out about 2" from the end. It's probably my favorite AR at this point. I'd stay away from setups that require a "modified" magazine b/c they're usually a pain to get and more expensive. The Colt SMG mags are $30+ while the UZI ones can get had for considerably less.

I always liked the idea of lowers taking Glock magazine, but I was weary of Olympic and their overall quality (sorry if I've offended anyone). My uncle has one of their dedicated 9mm guns (w/ fixed carry handle) that accepts modified sten gun mags and it works pretty well. If you don't like this setup, they sell an adapter that fits in the magwell that will allow the rifle to accept unmodified sten mags.

I would just price your options and see which gives you the most bang for your buck. There are also plenty of threads on http://www.ar15.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that you can check out and get some other opinions. Good luck!!

I was thinking of the mag-block and Uzi mag combo b/c I have a want for an Uzi also, but down the line. The lower that takes the Glock mags is a great option for sure but they are really hard to come by. I have not found one yet from a reputable supplier. I do believe I am wanting a dedicated 9mm gun so musical uppers will not be an issue, and I have a few other AR's at my disposal. If I could find a lower that would accept the Glock mags I think I would jump on it. I'll get the upper and goodies down the road. I think my other option will be the mag block for Uzi mags and a 9mm upper. I don't like the Sten mags and have no want/need for a Sten gun. Thank you for the input and links all the info I can gather is a big help.

I have also already read every article I could find on AR15.com pertaining to a 9mm AR set up.

About SOG...I have been in their store several times and seen them at a few shows around town. And bought a few things from them over the last few years. I think their people are very nice, informative, intelligent and all that, but their prices are just a tad high to me and they are not willing to negotiate on their prices much at all. I will give them a call and see what they have to say though.

Do you work for Talon Arms or do you work for the guy that own Talon Arms in another field?

Used to work there part-time...now I just work gun shows with Robert.

I have a flat top 9MM RRA carbine. It has a collaspable stock and all the furniture is green. I stuck a S.P.O.T. red dot sight on top.

Although I have built a bunch of AR15s over the years, I wanted this gun to be all factory because I had heard and read too many stories of 9MM frankenguns that would not run. They can really be finicky critters.

I originally bought this to use with a can but never got around to jumping into the class three thing. Now I am into 3 gun competitions big time and probably will not do anything more with this rifle.

At any rate, the 2-3 range trips I have made with this carbine were a hoot. It has been totally reliable with the factory mag that came with it and I have had good success with 4 aftermarket mags I bought from C products.

It also did wonders to get my wife over her fears regarding EBRs. She loves to shoot the 9mm and now has no problems with 5.56.

However, this rifle will probably be religated to being a safe queen as I only have so much spare time for the range and keeping the 3 gun equipment dialed in and me all practiced up.

Green is my color...want to sell it? Does it not qualify for the 3-gun matches or is the caliber an issue since its not a rifle caliber?
