460,000 CHLers...thats it?!?! I would hope we have the violent criminals out numbered by at least 3:1. I'm sure one of the statitician on here will let us know. Interesting comparison you bring up.

...if those numbers were published heavily, and if those violent offenders could/would read, NJ and MD and a few other gunhating states oughta get a heavy influx of new residents...from those who'd be leavin' Texas!!!

unfortunately i don't think you'll get a definitive answer to that question. it's fairly easy to keep track of the number of valid CHLs in the state, but it's nearly impossible to know how many violent criminals there are. you can't just count the number who have been convicted, or the number of violent crimes reported. not all violent criminals have been caught, and not all violent crimes are committed by separate criminals. i'm sure there's some way to get a good estimation though, i'd be interested to find out.

The good guys (CHL) are always going to be outnumbered by the bad guys.

edit: Texas' estimated 2011 population is 24 million with 460,000 CHLs that works out to about 2% of the population. There are 740,000 inmates in Texas that works out to 3.08% that's the ones under TDCJ supervision (locked up, parole, probation) there are probabily an equal or greater number on the street.

Just because a Texan doesn't have a CHL doesn't make him a BG.

Sorry, Wild Bill I didn't mean to insinuate that if one doesn't have a CHL they aren't one of the Good Guys. What I meant was the CHL holders were always going to be outnumbered by the Bad Guys. It was in response to the quote below.

No offense taken. My point was that comparing the only CHL holders to the criminal element skews the numbers. I think that the honest citizens in Texas outnumber violent criminals by more than 1000:1. :tiphat:

It also doesn't mean he doesn't have a gun either. ;-)

Dang! At least three percent of the population are violent criminals? Three out of every one hundred. Thats a lot of violent individuals.

We can't use the TOTAL number of convicted criminals to establish (or even guess at) who is/are/were violent offenders. People are arrested and convicted for all sorts of offenses (not all violent).

Also, violence can come in many forms...from many people.

It is sufficient to know that the potential for a violent encounter exists...and that we do well to be prepared for it.

I haven't had a flat tire in many years, but I darn sure carry a spare. ;-)

Where did I indicate that all convicted criminals are violent? If you look at what was stated you'll see that someone else misquoted what I stated earlier and said that bad guys will always out number CHL holders. Look closely its there. I took that as they were substituting the words bad guys for violent criminals and issued my response. Did you really think that you needed to clarify to me that folks are convicted of all sorts of offenses not just violent ones? Thats just insulting Bro.

It would also be interesting to know how many CHL's are armed at any given time. I know a number of people with their CHL that rarely if ever carry.

I agree that it is probably very low, but have no way of getting a good estimate. I think that parking lot and campus carry laws would increase that number quite a bit.
