I bought this:

It's a Winchester Model 70 Coyote Light chambered in .308, and now I need to start looking at glass, rings, and bases. I am a stickler for optics and how they mount so I am most definitely not looking forward to this process.

It may be a while since I won't start looking for glass to go on it until after I go on vacation in the middle of April, its not that I can't afford it but I want to keep the remainder of my "Fun money" intact for my vacation. As I said before I am a stickler for glass and how it mounts and I have been known to reject a scope for being too good for a particular application. This rifle will be used for hogs, and maybe deer, so I'll probably run a good cheaper scope on it (think $200 range). I regret selling my extra Zeiss, but it would have been too much scope to put on this rifle for what I plan to use it for. Alternatively I am open to suggestions...

Wow! Your Ace is WAY cooler than ours... GUNS AND TIRES! Ours is mostly lawn, garden and plumbing. While fun...not near as much fun as yours!

So... what about the two tires? Inquiring minds want to know.

Firestones in 225/70 on a 14 inch rim (goes on a 1998 Ford Ranger). One of my real good friends and his wife are the owner while another real good friend is their shop guy (Tires, brakes, alignments, other services).

BTW, I couldn't tell much about the new rifle from the picture. Is that a heavy profile barrel?

I got away from the whole muscle car scene about 5 years ago, still have one interesting Small Block Ford Engine.

The barrel is what Winchester calls a medium-heavy profile and is fluted. The stock is a carbon fiber and fiberglass mix, and the rifle weights just 7.5lbs. I did bust off a round just so I could say I shot it and recoil is not anywhere near what I expected from a light gun.

24 or 26" barrel?

I've got a really nice .308 R700 with a 26" heavy fluted barrel in an HS Precision stock, and I think it weighed in at about 8.5 lbs sans optics. Other than yours having a stainless barrel and action, our rifles are very similar.


Mine is left-handed, and I mounted a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 with the B&C reticle because I wanted a good all around general purpose scope. I got both the rifle and scope from Sporting Arms. I was actually looking for a different scope, but Sporting Arms had this one on hand, and they were returning it to their distributor because they had bought it for another customer and it wasn't what he wanted. They offered to sell it to me at their cost so they wouldn't have to pay the freight to ship it back. In as much as I had just gotten a $1,187.00 MSRP rifle from them for $831.00, that seemed like a pretty good deal. I think I paid about $535.00 or so for the scope. The combination works fine for me. The BDC reticle is calibrated for .308 range bullets out to 600 yards with a 200 yard zero, and realistically, I'm not likely to try and shoot something outside of 600 yards away, so that turns out to be a pretty good scope for my intended use. The rifle is certainly capable of further than that, but I have the old Mark I eyeballs, and they aren't capable.

The action on mine is blued while the barrel is stainless, other than that they are very similar guns in a similar price range.

I'm out 850 on a rifle that MSRPs for $1099. Just for the record my first gun was a bolt action purchased by my dad when I was five at a hardware store as well. I still have that rifle, its a Mossberg model 146b and shoots .22 Short/Long/Long Rifle.
