In the first of 10 "Surviving an Active Shooter" workshops presented by the Alamo Colleges police department this semester.
The video also provides useful and potentially life-saving tips on how to approach officers without being confused with the gunman, the difference between a hostage situation and a live shooter and how to react to either, and the likely reactions of a trained and untrained person.

I think that's great! A college that admits - yes, it REALLY could happen here, and is providing more advice than just hide or throw books at the shooter.

Well, after an armed robbery on campus, finding 35 burned out light bulbs in the parking lot, then on followup to that to be sure they were fixed, finding 80 burned out bulbs, and a particularly dark area near the building where a gunman robbed 2 students in a second floor bathroom .... they kinda have to admit it "could happen" ;-)

I wonder if the course material is available any place besides the session. It would be interesting to see what the LEOs are saying about differentiating oneself as a defender, not a perpetrator.

Dunno, I'd be interested in the 10 videos, they could sell them to all campuses if they are any good.

I'm not driving to S.A. for the question/answer sessions.

I was wondering if these are new or old outdated "throw a textbook" "aim for his eyes with a pen or paperclip" videos.
I'd like to see them.

Here's the Police Dept's website

OH MY, look at all the robberies and assaults !!! (also lots of assaults at UT-Austin)
Stop letting John Woodhead distract from personal protection and divert conversations to Virginia Tech which occurs only rarely.

Interesting page:
How to React to Certain Situations

Rape and Sexual Assault

Rape and sexual assault can occur at any time to anyone regardless of:
Age
Sex
Physical Appearance
Type of Dress
A defense strategy that saves a victim in one strategy might encourage the assailant in another. You personally will have to decide what kind of defense you are capablt of using if you are attacked. We recommend you attend some of the rape seminars held on campus through the year or one of the seminars held in our community

So, pro-choice on defense tools?
How can they say that while denying the right to choose one potentially most effective?

Found an "Advertisement" for potential criminals to read:
(Sounds like a vacation/travel brochure/list of available activities)

http://www.alamo.edu/district/dps/secli ... ention.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What crimes could be committed on campus

Crimes Against Persons: Rape, Robbery, Assault

Crimes Against Property: Burglary of offices,, buildings, classrooms, labs, gym lockers, filing cabinets, vehicles in parking lots

Thefts: Vehicles (includes bikes and motorcycles), purses, wallets, books, jewelry, cash, credit cards, College property

Arson

Criminal Mischief / Criminal Trespass
---------------------------------------------------

Can you order ala carte?

I don't see all possible crimes listed, is that all they serve?

I mean at U of H they have carjacking and kidnapping .... at least they did a month ago

Perhaps they have a better activities list/menu.
