Chris Christie Is Not Our Friend

Having spent some time in New Jersey, I was goofing around some news and tidbits from my old state and found this:

http://www.politickernj.com/wallye/22065/christie-guns" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Chris Christie ... supports the ban on assault weapons." It's from a campaign flyer from 1995.

Now, I am very impressed with him and what he has done for New Jersey. He's very intelligent and charismatic. I had written off New Jersey as being a lost cause socially and economically. I also was fully aware Christie wasn't sympathetic to the 2nd Amendment. He's also against concealed carry, at least in Jersey. However, I had no idea that he was downright hostile 2nd Amendment rights.

Christie has to be a heavy favorite to be the Republican nominee in 2012. If it's Christie versus Obama in 2012, I'll bet good money on Christie. Here's the thing, though. Obama knows that drastic new gun control efforts, especially the assault weapons ban, will kill his party in the future. I don't think he'll do it. Imagine, though, a *Republican* in the White House pushing for the ban. Christie and the Dems would jump on it, gleefully proclaiming bipartisanship efforts. Enough Congressional Republicans would fall in line to win favor with the President. The danger comes not from a Democrat President renewing the AWB (at least not this one), but a greater danger in 2012 is giving the wrong Republican the opportunity to renew the AWB.

Christie would enjoy the same gun-ban support that BHO currently does... Little.
Actually, after 2012 I'd bet we see an even more gun-friendly Congress.

Christie isn't gonna run...
No such thing as a Jersey politician without skeletons (buried in the Meadowlands) :mrgreen:

The other thing to consider is the climate and the timing of the original pamphlet. A lot has changed on RKBA public opinion in 16 years.

Has Christie said anything lately on the issue? Does he still feel this way?

(Note: Do not take this as me being an apologist for past wrongs - I'm not. However, people's opinions do change, and I embrace all those that have - legitimately - changed their minds on RKBA. We have a lot of converts over the years )

Christie on Hannity's show. October 2009:

HANNITY: Should every — should every citizen in the state be allowed to get a licensed weapon if they want one?

CHRISTIE: In New Jersey, that's not going to happen, Sean.

HANNITY: Why?

CHRISTIE: Listen, the Democratic legislature we have, there's no way those type of things — listen, at the end of the day, what I support are common sense laws that will allow people to protect themselves, but I also am very concerned about the safety of our police officers on the streets, very concerned. And I want to make sure that we don't have an abundance of guns out there.
