Chris Christie Is Not Our Friend

Having spent some time in New Jersey, I was goofing around some news and tidbits from my old state and found this:

"Chris Christie ... supports the ban on assault weapons." It's from a campaign flyer from 1995.
Now, I am very impressed with him and what he has done for New Jersey. He's very intelligent and charismatic. I had written off New Jersey as being a lost cause socially and economically. I also was fully aware Christie wasn't sympathetic to the 2nd Amendment. He's also against concealed carry, at least in Jersey. However, I had no idea that he was downright hostile 2nd Amendment rights.
Christie has to be a heavy favorite to be the Republican nominee in 2012. If it's Christie versus Obama in 2012, I'll bet good money on Christie. Here's the thing, though. Obama knows that drastic new gun control efforts, especially the assault weapons ban, will kill his party in the future. I don't think he'll do it. Imagine, though, a *Republican* in the White House pushing for the ban. Christie and the Dems would jump on it, gleefully proclaiming bipartisanship efforts. Enough Congressional Republicans would fall in line to win favor with the President. The danger comes not from a Democrat President renewing the AWB (at least not this one), but a greater danger in 2012 is giving the wrong Republican the opportunity to renew the AWB.
