My wife's new toy....

Ok, so my son and I each own a couple of ARs, and we both bought parts at the last Ft Worth gun show to start some more builds. He's doing two, and I planned one.... for my wife.

So, we finished my wife's tonight. There are a couple of odds and ends that need to be taken care of:

1. forgot to mount the sling swivel to the gas block, so I'll have to remove the handguards so I can get clearance to drive the pin in.

2. I had a spare ER Shaw M4 1:9 barrel and A2 flash hider, but I can't find the crush washer that goes under the flash hider, so right now it's just screwed on by hand. I've got to order a washer from somewhere.

3. Couldn't find a gas tube pin in my box o' parts to anchor the gas tube into the gas block, but I had another pin that was the right fit, but just a little too long, so I used it. But I've got to order the correct pin.

Other than that, here are the basics:
  • SOG Armory lower receiver
  • DPMS lower receiver parts kit
  • DPMS commercial tube
  • Yankee Hill Machine assembled upper
  • Daniel Defense bolt/carrier assembly
  • ER Shaw M4 1:9 barrel
  • A.R.M.S. #40L-P flip up rear BUIS
  • Vortex Strikefire red dot sight with 2X magnifier
  • Burris XTR High Ring
  • Magpul MOE 6 position collapsible buttstock and MOE carbine length handguard
This is her first ever rifle, and I wanted her to have a light and handy one so that she would have fun with it instead of feeling weighed down by it. I think we succeeded. Seat of the pants impression is a maybe 6-6.5 lb carbine. Probably won't be able to get to the range right away, but I'll post results when we do. In the meantime, here are a few quick snapshots I took of it just a few minutes ago:

Well, we haven't had the chance to actually shoot with it yet, but it seems to be worth the price, which was $133.24 from Brownells. It has both a red and green dot, adjustable for intensity, and it has a night vision setting. It has windage and elevation knobs to zero the dot. My one piece of advice is to order it with the high mount. Their website (Vortex's) says that the low mount will cowitness with irons, but that's not the actual case. I had a pair of high Burris XTR rings laying around, and one of those solved the problem. If I ever order another one, I'll order it with the high mount instead.

Yeah I know.... But the only way I was going to get her into centerfire rifles was with an AR carbine because a) they are light, and b) they have a very mild recoil impulse.

But seriously, this one IS hers....although I'm a wee bit jealous.

Have you tried saying, "this one's for you, honey?"

I bought her a S&W 642 for Valentine's Day 3 years ago. She was tickled pink to have her own gun, finally. She's happy to have a new carbine too.

Just leave it in the trunk till she is not home and bring it in then. It will just blend in with the rest of your collection and go un-noticed. Kinda the same way she probably does when she buys a new purse or pair of shoes...I have a friend that his wife will do that and just leave all but two shopping bags in her trunk until he leaves. Her closet is so full he never even notices the added shoes, clothes, purses whatever it is goes un-noticed until a statement comes in or she does not hide the bags well enough. It goes the same way for him and gun stuff though.

My wife lets me buy whatever I want if we can afford it, she doesn't care at all. If we can't afford it at the time I have no business buying it anyway.

TAM, if you guys ever split, "Will you marry me?"

BTW, speaking of husbands getting wives the wrong gift... this is the funniest ad I've ever seen... very well done. 3 or 4 mins long, but worth it. It was made as an online ad only for JCPenney. I get more humor out of it after watching again because there's a LOT of subtle stuff in there... Very well done.

OH Yeah... I know. But, here's the beauty of it.... she's tickled to have carbine, but she doesn't yet know that it needs a new trigger. By then, she'll be so into it that she'll order a new one without telling me, and then ask me or my son to install it for her when it comes.

Genius, yes? :smilelol5:
