Several years ago wife and I rented a home in Houston, in a very good neighborhood, while waiting for closing on the purchase of a home nearby. During the month or so we were there, sitting on boxes and sleeping on a mattress on the floor, we had several young grandkids visit, all of whom had great fun playing in an almost empty house -- a ghost house, for their playground. They had so much fun, for example, climbing up on the shelves in empty closets.

You guessed it. A couple of weeks later I found a loaded revolver stuffed away in the back corner of a shelf in a bedroom closet. Scared the dickens out of me as I thought of the young'uns snooping around earlier. The expression on my face as I delivered the (now unloaded) weapon to its owner, my landlord, who had forgotten not only where he had put it, but even that he owned it, said something unsayable in polite company.

This was a real wakeup call, not just a hypothetical situation, which only happens to others, but never to me. Not only do I and my sons take training gun safety to youngsters early on more seriously because of this incident, but we all check our gun safes regularly to insure that everything is where it belongs, and not forgotten about somewhere where it doesn't belong.

2. Since I have a CHL and it is in my wallet, quietly conceal the weapon somewhere on my person, touching the weapon carefully only with my handkerchief,

3. Take the nearest approachable identifiable LEO aside privately, explain the situation, and unobtrusively give him the weapon and its ammo, taking back a receipt.

If I did not have a CHL it would take a little more thought. Not wanting to leave it unattended I would probably wait for another patron to visit the restroom and ask him to contact the police for me and tell them where I was and that I needed them. Then I would be sure to keep my hands out of my pockets and in sight, separated, as I awaited their arrival.

I wouldn't even touch it. I would report it to the nearest LEO and definitely not the airline personnel or security.

So what did you do with the gun?

As I said in my post, I returned it to its owner, my landlord, although only after clearing it and he described it to my satisfaction.
