Overheard on the scanner radio app tonight while listening to the happenings amidst the severe thunderstorm:
The Colony police officer running serial number on "glock 40, serial number puc812"
I wonder what circumstances led up to this action by The Colony police? Perhaps he is one of those officers who feels inclined to run serial numbers on citizens who have done nothing wrong, as others have described in their LEO encounter stories? So many things left to wonder.

It could have been entirely legit.

Maybe a felony arrest.

Honestly I would feel better if LEO's ran serial numbers. Just in case my gun was ever stolen, that would make it more likely to be recovered.

Could be a whole host of reasons. Anytime I find a gun (not on a CHL holder during a traffic stop) I try and run it.

Ok, i figured there might have been an entirely legitimate reason. Its tough to know for sure since I only caught part of the transaction between the officer and dispatch.

It is my understanding most of the gripes come from being detained during a traffic stop...which would indicate commission of an offense.

I know, I know.. I'm beating a dead horse.... BUT for discussion sake..
Ok I'll bite.. LEO contact made due to a tail light out, the citizen is "guilty" of a traffic offence..... What does the gun have to due with the offence?

What supporting evidence to the "offence" can a gun concealed properly in the car by a over 21 year old Texas citizen legally able to posses a handgun provide to the LEO?

I dont doubt the search is legal, the LEO is within his mission statement provided by his department and lawfully allowed to conduct a search, taking without permission personal property that has no connection to the "crime" and conduct a "search" (run the serial number).. I dont like it, i believe it's wrong, and it's another reason why legal US citizens in the US, should respectfully state they do not consent to a search, never lie to a LEO, but respectfully not answer the fishing expedition questions posed by an officer that are unconnected to the reason for contact. It does not have to be confrontational, nor disrespectful.

I think a lot of LEO's do this right, it's not them I'm concerned with.. It's the very small percentage that are not morally or ethically sound. What,, you say thats paranoid? Guess what, the anti's say the same thing about concealed carry of a hand gun. Base you're decisions and actions on the every day, have a plan for the what if's.

...a lot of crimes have been solved years later because the weapon had been entered as stolen into NCIC...as long as the officer can justify why the gun came under his control...i.e. pursuant to an arrest, holding it from a CHL while completing his business with him...or any one of a million things that are observed while on patrol...I have no problem with his running the #...if he's just messing with me...that'll be obvious...and there are ways to handle that...but not on the street...
