Not a good idea - - - there has been more than one gun blown up doing that. The shell is too big for the bore of the shotgun - - - pressure will go sky high.

I don't have a shotgun handy, but aren't most/all of them straight bore, where the entire bore is the same ID as the OD of the shell?
Unlike a rifle which has a step in diameter from chamber to bore.
If that is true, then the pressure will probably be higher just because the cut case would fill the bore more completely than a wad and a shot cup w/shot.
I'd want to be sure I had a cylinder bore.

No they have a chamber just like a rifle or pistol. Otherwise you wouldn't need a 3" or 3 1/2" gun to shoot the longer shells. I'll buy some slugs myself thank you. Those three goobers looked like refugees from "Deliverance."

If that was so common in the early 20th century, when so many of the old guns had Damascus steel barrels, you'd think Darwin would have taken care of that notion.

He did - - - just didnt get 'em all.
edit:
Oh yea, damascus barrels won't take the pressure of smokless loads much less a cut shell.
