New Type of CHL Class

I recently went back home to Houston and my dad pointed out an ad in the Chronicle. There is a man advertising CHL classes that require no written or target exams and no passport photo or finger print card. I called the man and he said something about a reciprocation law that Perry signed in 05 with Oregon. He spoke so fast I didn't understand what he was saying. If anyone can shed light on this I'd appreciate it.

Run from it.
Texas DPS requires 10 hrs of training. Written Test & Shooting proficiency.

I'm surprised we reciprocate with Oregon if that's all they require.

Nope -- Oregon not on the list of either reciprocal or unilateral states.
Google "Oregon CHL" -- places advertise doing everything needed for an Oregon CHL in under 90 minutes ONLINE.

I recently moved here from WA state (the left coast) and per the below quote from the Txdps website ...

As far as that class... I've been researching since I got here and have not heard anything about not having to do the 10 hour class... sounds like he wants to get some $$$ and then blame the state when you don't get your CHL or he is just more informed than the rest of us... :smilelol5: :smilelol5: :smilelol5:

November 18, 2005 Washington

Note: Effective immediately, Governor Perry has issued a proclamation that allows persons with concealed handgun licenses from Washington to legally carry in Texas. Washington license holders will be required to follow Texas law while carrying in this state. This proclamation is unilateral and is not a reciprocal agreement. Texas concealed handgun license holders will not be allowed to carry in Washington.

In fact, the Oregon CCl is not reciprocal in a lot of states.

http://www.handgunlaw.us/LicMaps/ccwmap.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The link won't save with Oregon checked.
But if you check Oregon, there is a lot of red.

I wondered if it might have been Utah -- MUCH discussion on this board regarding Utah.
Utah licenses will not be valid for Tx residents unless they also have TX licenses. -- New Utah law.

He's in for a big surprise. (Or maybe he's trying to rip off people who don't know any better.) That deal ends on May 10. Renewals are dead on Jan 1, 2012.

Utah passed legislation squashing it.
74 (4) (a) In addition to meeting the other qualifications for the issuance of a concealed
75 firearm permit under this section, a nonresident applicant who resides in a state that recognizes
76 the validity of the Utah permit or has reciprocity with Utah's concealed firearm permit law
77 shall:
78 (i) hold a current concealed firearm or concealed weapon permit issued by the
79 appropriate permitting authority of the nonresident applicant's state of residency; and
80 (ii) submit a photocopy or electronic copy of the nonresident applicant's current
81 concealed firearm or concealed weapon permit referred to in Subsection (4)(a)(i).
82 (b) A nonresident applicant who knowingly and willfully provides false information to
83 the bureau under Subsection (4)(a) is prohibited from holding a Utah concealed firearm permit
84 for a period of 10 years.
85 (c) Subsection (4)(a) applies to all applications for the issuance of a concealed firearm
86 permit that are received by the bureau after May 10, 2011.
87 (d) Beginning January 1, 2012, Subsection (4)(a) also applies to an application for
88 renewal of a concealed firearm permit by a nonresident.

This is a scam.

Utah DOES require both photos and fingerprints for the Utah CFP. They perform the same FBI background check that Texas does.

$233 for 4 hours of instruction? That is TWICE what your average Texas CHL instructor charges for 10 hours of instruction!

And last, not mentioned at all on this website.... As of May 10, 2011, the non-resident Utah CFP will not be valid unless you also have a resident permit from your home state.

BTW, I moved this to General TX CHL Discussion from DPS Updates, as it does not belong there

Even better...a gun shop owner in Granbury TX tells customers they don't need conceal carry license if they have them IN their pockets or in their pants. He insists that CARRY means wearing on your belt, and that as long as they are inside your clothes you are good to go. He further stated that IF you DO get a CHL...then you can no longer wear inside your clothes or purse, because that would not be "carry."..... :waiting:
