PC 46.03 only applies to school "premises" which means buildings, etc, not parking lots.
That news-blurb lacks details; they must have had them in the dorms or something.

Okay, maybe I am getting more cynical in my old age, but am I the only one who thinks this was done to bias people against guns? The headline and primary part of the article are about two football players being charged with drugs and theft. Then, there is another paragraph that is about two other students, in an unrelated incident, who were charged for carrying firearms on campus.

I think there is a very subtle attack being made here, as the average user will link drugs, college students, and guns in their mind. And I think this was done deliberately, too.

the question is pocessing shotguns on the campus and/or dorms is considered a felony?

I think in this case you are being too cynical. The tie-in is that all four are members of the football team. So it doesn't seem that out of place to write that two players were arrested on drug charges, and oh, by the way, two other players were charged with weapons violations.

Gun on campus. How shocking. Liberals have taught this generation to over react.
Two years ago someone reported a man in downtown Austin with a rifle and the police had most of downtown shut down.
A lot of people live downtown and it could just be someone returning to their loft from the range. No one was caught.

Sometimes when driving in my neighborhood I feel like a crimminal when some poor innocent kid out riding a bike with her parents is forced to the side of the curb as I slowly and politely drive past. The parents glare at me as if I'm going to run over their kid.These kids are not allowed outside without parents accompanying them. This builds the same fears in our childern. When I was young I had my bike all over town and parents had no idea where I was because they trusted me to know how to stay safe. How are our kids going to ever learn self reliance, courage and have the ablity to take care of themselves in really bad situations? We are crippling the new generations with our fears thus when the police gets a man with gun call everyone assumes the worse.

I don't think there is any doubt that many "news" items about guns are deliberately presented in a way that is intended to put guns and self-defense in a negative light. I think the two primary methods are association, as here, and omission. For an example of omission, look at how the misuse of guns is covered versus their use in self-defense. Every day there are national stories about guns in schools and killings, but even dramatic uses of guns for self-defense usually remain local stories.

I sure hope they get good representation and plead those charges down to a misdemeanor.
I'd hate to see them get their gun rights taken away.

Drugs and illegal weapons? Maybe that's the only way for a RIce football player to get into the NFL.

Thanks for clarifying that. The story link in the original post just gave the names of two men and said they were arrested.I would not have even known they were students, let alone football players, if the final line had not said that "friends of the students". I guess if I were from the Houston area, or followed Rice football, I might have seen this connection instead of just the crime connection.

I suppose this answers Dr. Holda's question (during the committee hearing for HB750 et al.) whether a dorm room is a residence for the purpose of Chapter 46.

Well, I had an advantage you didn't have. I read the second article first, which made the football player connection quite clear. ("The arrest is one of four involving Rice football players last week.") Then, when I read the first article, I already knew they were football players as well. If I had read the first article first, I might have agreed with you. Looking at it from that perspective, the writer obviously assumed the readers would already know who he was talking about. Otherwise the last two sentences make no sense at all.

I didn't even check when I was in college. Come duck season I had my shot gun and hunted before class a number of times. I wouldn't care for the rules or laws they have now.
