In Coon Rapids, Minnesota (Minneapolis area), Thursday an officer was wounded during a training exercise at a police range. The officer is recovering after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition. The cause of the accident has not been determined.

In 2002 I was working in Irving when PO was killed in a training scenario that was supposed to use only "rubber" weapons. The Idiot who used a real firearm, without checking for live ammunition, was a senior officer with over 10 years service.

When I was in LE, many depts. seemed concerned if you had an interest in guns. I heard the stories about officers only shooting their sidearms for qualification. How can you be a good officer and not take an interest in your weapon and how to safely and effectively use it? If your not a "gun person", you will not have the motivation to treat the gun properly and people will be hurt or killed. Just my opinion.

Jeeze -- google "officer shot in training exercise" -- it's amazing there are any officers left! (Not trying to be funny -- I'm shocked!)

I was looking for a story a while back about an officer that shot his partner. They had been at a training exercise in which "non-lethal" ammunition was being used. Apparently, part of the training was to receive a round from another officer. The two partners had gone to lunch, and on the way back, the victim asked his partner to shoot him (with the training ammo) before returning to class, "To see what it felt like". The partner FORGOT he had swapped out the training ammo for real ammo when they went to lunch. The shot officer died.

I couldn't find the article amongst all the other officer training shootings on google.
