Do you know this man?
A man named John D. Hannah, who was born on Aug 11, 1955 and raised around the Wayne County, Michigan area died recently and no one has come forward to pay their last respects or claim the veteran's remains. He was an E8 in the US Navy and his wife died about 10 years ago.
If you don't know him, please pass the article on in the hopes that those you know might recognize him.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've posted the article on my FB page with a request for others to repost and pass it on. I've got a number of retired military in my friends list who know others who know others.... if everyone who has FB posts it, maybe we can get some decent coverage for this story. A veteran deserves to be mourned and not be forgotten.

...found one listed on White Pages.com with several family member names...about that age...if they can prove his military service, couldn't they bury him in a national cemetary without family??? if they could find his wife's obituary, it likely lists family members...
(not the one by the same name who publishes through Zondervan...they are NorthEasterners)

I do not and did not know him, but I am contacting the funeral home to see if a donation of $100.00 would help defray the costs associated with the death of a man I consider a shipmate.

If he was an E8 surely he was retired, and in did 20 or more years? They don't say. Aren't there veteran's cemeteries for such things? I was under the impression that if you retired the military paid for a lot of the costs of your funeral.

You don't even have to be retired from the military to be eligible for burial in any of the National Cemeteries. All that is required is that you have been honorably discharged.

As far as I know (being a vet) they'll pay to bury my bones when I'm done using them...

Forgot to mention though. The government won't pay for the casket and we may have even had to purchase the burial vault it's been over 10 years since I dealt with it.

They give you a plot and a headstone. Nothing more, nothing less.
