I saw this article and it bothered me, I have never been a huge fan of comics, but to have a character renounce his US citizenship thats too far. Comics have always been as american as apple pie and I think DC will regret this move.

Comics have always been an outlet for folks to push the envelope. I don't have a problem with uncomfortable issues being raised in this particular manner. After all, comics have almost always been a reflection of fantasy and the outrageous.
In real-life, hey, if you want to renounce your citizenship...just do it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
EDIT: LoadedLiberal, I don't want this to come across as a personal attack but are you sure you are a Liberal?

When did he become a citizen? He wasn't born here. Isn't he an illegal alien?

That's what I thought but maybe he was naturalized somewhere along the way. When it comes to Superman and Clark Kent, I have been out of the loop ever since I found out about girls.
Does the Clark Kent secret identity still exist? If so, isn't he the one who would need US citizenship (or a green card) to legally work here?

Seriously. It's not like Steve Rogers renounced his citizenship.

He was born off planet but was raised as a U.S. Citizen since infancy. Heck all he'd have to do is come up with a Smallville birth certificate and he could run for president.
*Flame Retardent: This is a joke folks and should not be construed as a political statement of any sort.

Kind of a surprising move on DC's part...but you got to move units somehow and controversy seems to do the trick.

Superman's suit is flame retardant so that shouldn't be a problem.
