Me and my wife are heading to san Antonio for our first anniversary. Last time we went we went to a Mexican restaurant on the riverwalk but were not impressed by it. Can someone recommend a good Mexican restaurant in the area?

GOOD Mexican food on the riverwalk? There isn't any. There's Mexican food, and it isn't terrible, but I'd rather eat in a good restaurant away from the river.

Guys...isn't that what my post said? That I don't like the Mexican food on the riverwalk. I am trying to find something in the area that is good.

I enjoyed Mi Tierra the last time I was in San Antonio. It's a short walk from the Riverwalk and they also have an extensive Mexican bakery.

How close do you consider near the Riverwalk?

I still think this is the best Mexican food in all of San Antonio, which basically makes it the best in all of Texas.
Rosario's - S. Alamo St. a block south of S. St. Mary's ... southern part of downtown.
Can be a bit pricey depending what you order (especially the booze), but the food is fantastic and ranges from Tex-Mex to interior Mexican, Coastal Mexican, and even some Spanish and South American dishes.
Very crowded on weekends, but I think they take reservations.

Another good one was the La Margarita, near Mi Tierra.

BTW, I lived on San Antonio for 7 years and agree all the Riverwalk Mexican is subpar. Rio Rio, Casa Rio, and The Original have been going downhill for years and we avoided the whole area much of our time there. Since leaving, however , we've eaten at Zuni Grill a few times on trips back to see friends and it's OK.
I also wasn't impressed with Mi Tiera, bur mainly because it was overrun with tourists.
If you get out of downtown, La Fonda is good. And Alamo Cafe has the best fresh flour tortillas in Texas.

My wife and I really like Jacala at 606 West Ave.
It's not by the River Walk, but it's good food.

I like Los Barrios on Blanco out of downtown. La Fonda is good, as well. If you want good Tex Mex, go up to Helotes to El Chapparal.
The thing about the Riverwalk area restaurants is that they cater to those not blessed to be born in Texas. The best ones are the hole-in-the-walls the locals like.

My bad, Greg. Sorry about that. I guess I didn't pay attention when I read your OP. Unfortunately, I can't help you about the restaurants. The only one I ate at was at the river walk, and it was abysmal.
