I'm going to visit a buddy that works for Cabellas corporate in NB.
I've looked on a few sites to make sure I follow the laws. Just driving through OK and KS,
but we'll be camping in NB at a state park a couple of days.

I didn't see anything major that concerned me. I saw that banks and churches are off limits,
as are all govt. offices.

Can anyone think of things I need to be aware of on the trip as a Texas CHL holder carrying concealed in these states?

Not sure where NB is (I am going to assume you intended to say Nebraska - NE)? However, keep a least a 1,000 feet away from any schools outside of TX.

Do you mention this because he is not a resident of that state, carrying on a Texas CHL as a Texas resident?

(A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.


(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm—

(i) on private property not part of school grounds;

(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;

The way the law is written you must posses a license from the state where the school is located. IANAL YMMV.........

Be careful in New Brunswick. Canadian gun laws are very strict.

I enjoyed the trip. Other than the long drive there and back. I was able to spend a long weekend with good friends and whip them badly in 7 game card tourney of hand and foot.

My buddy works for Cabela's corporate, so we got the tour of town and the store and went by the owner's house (outside, not invited in). I fell in love with a couple of Henry rifles that I'm trying to resist the urge to call back up and tell them to send to me.

So, how does one keep 1000 feet from a school if one is on vacation driving down the highway or road while just passing through the state?

Is one supposed to know where every school is, or when one sees the school sign, turn around and find another way to his destination?

And since this other state has agreed to accept his CHL from Texas, then he only needs to follow the state laws he is in as if he were a resident of that state.

Not trying to start an argument, but we travel to Kansas a lot and do pass right by several schools. And if I remember, these schools are out in the country with no visible meens of a way around them.

This is something that I never worry about, since it is impossible to manage. Besides, I remember seeing a map where over 90% of populated areas in the US are within 1000 feet of a school.

If someone is selling drugs and gets busted by the DEA, or robbing banks and gets busted by the FBI, the whole GFSZ becomes a nice add-on charge. However, local and state cops aren't going to press federal charges on an otherwise law-abiding citizen.

Telling someone to "enjoy your trip, but watch out for schools" doesn't do anyone any favors. First, it creates useless stress since it cannot be meaningfully managed. Second, it is an extraordinarily rare charge. In fact, I'd love to see anyone post a single court case where it was not an add-on charge for other federal felony charges.

If some law-abiding citizen ever does get charged, it is a beautiful test case waiting to happen.
