Im a new CHL instructor and am trying to structure my classes to accomodate 50-60 people. The main logistical issue I am having is finding a range that can accomodate at least hal of the shooting at the same time.

I am in Arlington. does anyone know of a range that can accomodate 30 people shooting at the same time on a saturday afternoon?

It will be difficult to find a 30 lane range. Just as a suggestion/example we have a 15 lane indoor gun range in League City and try to qualify everyone as early as possible in the morning BEFORE we open for business. This allows me to use all of my lanes, the students hear the range commands better and it is just plain safer. You might try to approach a range in your area with this approach. It is likely the will try to accommodate your request because that is easy money.

Good Luck,

50-60 students is an awfully large class size.

My associate and I had a class of 24 once. It was all two instructors could do to keep order on the range. I don't like to supervise more than 5 shooters at a time if I am the only instructor.

DPS has about a 1:5 ratio of instructors to students at the instructor's classes.

When Chas. L. Cotton taught my class, there were about 10 people.

I'd rather pay to hear him teach ten of us than pay anyone else to teach 50-60 at a time. Sheeesh.

When I taught we taught large classes but allowed only 5 shooters at a time.

I am wondering how a person could teach 50 students and answer all the questions that would come up from an original CHL class. A class that size sounds to me that it would end up being a 14 hours class or "death by powerpoint". The shooting aspect would be another issue, personally I would not attend a class that size and would definatly not be on a range with that many newbies around me with few instructors to watch out for peoples safety. With all due respect I would seriously reconsider the class size and bring it down to a manageable number....

I can't even imagine how I would feel or what it would sound like shooting simultaneously with 30 other people. What if they were all 44 magnums? And indoors? I think I have found my first phobia.

As a Range Safety Officer that works with CHL classes, I can tell you that you need at least one RSO per 4 shooters. When we do range time, we have the Range Master calling the course of fire, and at least one RSO walking the line for 8 shooters max. One person can usually only deal with 4 people tops, and you will almost always have a person who has a problem with a FTF or FTE, and you have to deal with them.

So, as a new CHL instructor, you may have grandiose ideas of large classes, but it will be a real nightmare unless you have LOTS of help with logistics for the class that size and at least 6-8 RSO's for 30 shooters at a time.

Or the amazing self-disassembling Beretta!
Student had a FTF, removed magazine, pulled the slide back, let it go, and launched both slide and barrel down range. Had nothing left in his hand but a frame! Makes it kinda hard to finish the course of fire that way.

So, what score did the slide and barrel make on the target? "rlol"

I'm having flashbacks to army qualifications (50-60 people) Safe on the right? The right is safe. Safe on the left? The left is safe..........

I had like 88 people in my CHL class. I was told it was the largest CHL class held in Texas. They qualified people on 2 different parts of the range in groups. It took a while but it wasn't too bad.

Wow, did you know there were going to be that many people in the class going into it?
