Sorry if this has been posted before but I cannot find it.

I was recently told that if you have a CHL and you are stopped but not carrying you do not need to show your CHL.

To me it makes no sense because the cop will run your DL and see that you have a CHL. It would seem to me that
it is best to always show your CHL carrying or not.

This is a gray area kinda, it is no longer grounds for suspension if you fail to show however i would always show my CHL armed or not.

Not a good idea. When (or if) he runs your license, it will come back showing that you have a CHL. This will raise suspicion unnecessarily.

License and CHL in hand, with hands at 10 & 2...smileon your face.

GC §411.205. REQUIREMENT TO DISPLAY LICENSE. (a) If a license
holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's
person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license
holder display identification, the license holder shall display both the license
holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the
department and the license holder's handgun license.

The information you were given was correct, but it has already been pointed out that it's a good idea to tell the officer even if you're not carrying. No good can come from raising his hackles.

I agree that's it's a good idea to show both IDs. Before I got my CHL I was stopped by a police officer while walking around my apartment complex and he came back to me after running my ID and asked if I was carrying. Their system was showing my CHL was active before the DPS website even said it was approved!

As an aside: I was stopped because I was walking around the building my friend was going to be moving into, but it was still technically under construction so when security saw me they called the police. There was no tension or anger during the event, although security said they thought it was weird I'd want to look around at a building under construction. My response was, "I guess I'm weird."

Last year I actually let my license expire. I've been told you shouldn't carry an expired license so I pulled mine out of my wallet. Six mounts later I got pulled over by Plano, PD for a burnt out break light. The officer took my license and insurance and then came back and asked about my CHL. I explained that it was expired and I no longer carried it. In the end he let me off with a warning, but this incident told me they can look up a chl's even with one thats is expired.

On a side note the officer encouraged me to renew it(and I did). He even went as far as to recommend someone.

There is no grey area. There was never grounds for suspension for failure to show if you were not carrying, only if you were.

I would always show. Its not good if they think you have something to hide. and smile.

I had the same thing happen to me with the Garland Police. I got a long lecture on the need to renew it and carry.

I've had the thing go both ways, been stopped and given the DL and CHL and been asked if I am carrying and said no and then been chewed for giving it when I am not carrying, then on another occaison been chewed for not giving the CHL even though I am not carrying, also been chewed for not carrying at all, so it really depends on the LEO and how he/she feels about the subject

Regardless, I am giving both DL and CHL to the officer as he arrives at my window. He can then tell me how he wishes to proceed from there.

If you are a chl holder and not carrying then no issue - BUT let me ask this - is there a reason not to let leo know from the begining?

Once they go to run your DL they will know you have a CHL - then there is going to be the question raised of why you didnt just notify. Anything I can do to make leo life less strefull I figure why not.

I was pulled over a few months ago by DPS. I wasn't carrying concealed (sales and can't take into customer parking lots until Sept 1). I did have my Mossberg home defense shotgun under the back seat to drop off at a gun smith. I ran the window down, hands at 10 and 2, handed DL and CHL as he approached and informed him about my shotgun. He wanted to know what kind and asked how I liked it. He said he had the same in his cruiser. Came back after running my license and said, 'have a nice day".

I am not following what you mean by the highlighted portion of your post. Are you talking about the Employee Parking Lot Bill? That would only apply to employees not contractors, visitors, or salesmen.
