I pray for the guy, but he got hurt in the process. Either way, thankfully no one died.

SAN ANTONIO -- An attempted robbery at a southeast side pawn shop was thwarted Wednesday evening by a man with a concealed carry license who exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

The suspect and a security guard, who was also a customer at the store, were both hurt in the altercation.

It happened at about 7:15 p.m. at an EZ Pawn at Gevers and Fair Avenue.

An example of one ugly but very important fact: if you're involved in a gunfight, the chances of your being shot are incredibly high.

Only in movies do the good guys beat the bad guys without a scratch. In any armed confrontation, you will very likely also be shot.

This is one thing you must take into consideration when deciding if you are going to intervene in any situation. Is what you're protecting potentially worth your life?

That was a "fair" fight. If you're involved in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

...the numbers can be made to back up involving yourself or not...what it boils down to for me is the danger to myself or others...NOT money, beer, or KFC...stuff is stuff...but people are precious...
...the element of total surprise and MY choice of timing put an armed person at a great disadvantage...plus I'm using my head and he's not, or wouldn't be there robbing a pawn shop in the first place...unless he just looooooves the cameras...last fair fight I got into hurt...so I quit doing that...long about 1963...

Back or butt I'll wager he was moving and/or twisting away from BG's return fire. Could have entered from a side angle but hit the back/butt. Have to wait and see.

Maybe the shooting started when he had his back turned, and he returned fire. Pure speculation on my part.

...gives a whole new meaning to "twist and shout"...

Most LEO's in active jurisdictions come to that same conclusion about the same way pretty early on in their careers, often while reflecting on recent events while awaiting treatment in the ER.

I've avoided a goodly number of physical altercations over the years by letting the arrestee to be know that, while this might be sport for him, I was doing this for a living and I didn't fight fair. I was upfront about the fact that I'd use whatever tactics and weapons I had to and as many of my fellow officers as I needed to get the job done, and in the end it was an absolute certainty that he was going to jail anyway. The only variables were how much or how little it would hurt, whether the trip to jail would or would not involve a detour to the emergency room, and whether or not he'd have several more years added to his upcoming prison time as a result.

Some still had enough brain cells left to think that through and come to a reasonable conclusion.

The others learned the hard way that I wasn't kidding and the decision they made wasn't a good one. While the experience didn't get them what they wanted, it did help to educate their friends.

The number one rule of police work is to make decisions and take action in a way that ends up with going home at the end of the shift in just as good shape as you started it in. Every LEO owes that to himself and his family.

...those were my standard "Captain's announcements"...never had to fight one...never had a foot come over the back of the seat...(we had no screens)...it worked on parking ticket scofflaws and still-bloody murderers...nobody likes pain...nowadays, a lot of 'em are so hopped up they can't feel any...

That's true, and that circumstance drastically alters the equation.

LEO's have to be prepared for suspects to attack viciously under circumstances where they have no hope of winning and where it makes no sense at all - just becuz.

Later, when they wake up in the hospital and their self prescribed medications wear off, they might well not remember what they did or why.

...you can't teach people how to make that split second do or don't call...you give 'em all the facts and they either have what it takes to do that or not...being a street cop helps, but I've seen sergeants and lieutenants who didn't have what it took to deal with those situations...we were happy if they stayed away...most folks don't process that quickly...it's good that most don't have to...there's nothing fun or heroic about it...it's just doing what has to be done...and hopefully doing it right...
