I'm sitting in the CHL instructor class right now and we just got updated numbers for CHL holders and Instructors. As of today, there are 495,730 CHL holders as pulled from the DPS computers. Also at the end of this week, there will be 2,455 instructors if all the people in this class pass. And looking around I count about 82 people in here.

From what Sgt said he runs them as they fill up. I think you are already the 4-5th class to go thru this year already.

Yes, right now I know there were two in April, two in June, two planned for August and he's started filling up 2 new dates in Oct. They are trying to keep classes at 80 and having no trouble reaching that.

do instructors re-certify for their own chls at the same increments we do or does being a certified instructor gain you anything regarding your own license?
And, thanks for the numbers! I've considered doing the instructor thing, but it seems like there are already a ton of them out there.
Wonder if we'll hit the 1,000,000 mark first or get constitutional carry first.

Well they just said that as of this morning they are seeing about 11,500 apps per month so far this year. There are not enough people to handle that number but they are averaging 25 days per original right now. The way they are getting that down is by pushing more and more online. So as they convert it will allow them to get more done quickly.
As such, they are working to push more and more online. The app process will eventually give more details than "Application Processing"!
As to your question, instructors and licensees are separate. They are on different schedules. But...if you took the instructors class then your class and proficiency are good for 6 months or 2 years to be used on a CHL license. So if you don't have a CHL you can turn in the forms from the class as your course. Or you can use this as your renewal. So for a lot of folks they get renewals. If you can apply for a renewal within 6 months (that means if you expire in less than a year since you can apply 6 months early and this is good for 6 months...).
There is no self certifying but you can certify each other. The reason for that is that just 2 weeks ago they had an instructor candidate (who passed) that they had to teach how to load their gun. They still qualified for proficiency but they had to have someone teach them. So cross certifying is required.
Also they are still in the process of updating the rules for instructor renewal. It's in legal right now but they are going to allow cross certify of proficiency between instructors for renewal. If an instructor can certify 100's of students a month, then reasonably they can certify another instructor! So no returning to Austin for class (online test) and range time with another instructor. I should post that info in the instructors corner as well.

There have been rumors from DPS about cross-certifying proficiency for a while now. There are also DPS rumors that perhaps we won't have to re-qualify at all -- at least this time.
